Job Summary

The role of the Student Cardiovascular Sonographer is to become proficient at all functions required to schedule, perform and process echo and/or vascular ultrasound examinations under the direction of the Cardiovascular Educator. When the student is working on campus (versus being a student in clinical rotation), the Cardiovascular Educator they are assigned to will decide what tasks the Student Cardiovascular Sonographer shall perform. At no time will the Student Cardiovascular Sonographer provide direct patient care without their assigned Cardiovascular Educator. The job responsibilities for a Student Cardiovascular Sonographer must be performed under direct supervision of a Registered Cardiovascular Sonographer or other necessary medical supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent;
Actively enrolled in an accredited Cardiovascular Program
Minimum Years of Experience: None.
Substitutable Education & Experience: None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Must be certified in CPR or certified within 3 months of employment, Bi- annual CPR recertification required;
Required Training:
Maintain CEU’s;
Annual mandatory Safety and Infection Control training on Synquest;
Competency skills maintenance in performing Echo and Vascular Studies .
Must possess excellent understanding of medical terminology.

Essential Functions

  • Current student in an accredited program. The theory, principles and concepts of the cardiovascular role, should be learned in the classroom. The experience in the department will be to enhance that knowledge and to help the student with practical experience.
  • One-on-One hands on training assistance with a registered sonographer will be provided until student is felt competent to perform the study independently. Echo or Vascular lab independence (within 6 months).
  • Become registry eligible and attain registry within 12 months (either echo or vascular).
  • Become cross-trained in the Echo and Vascular lab within a reasonable amount of time (24 months).
  • Applies excellent understanding of normal and abnormal cardiac anatomy in relation to the cardiovascular disease process and/or arterial and venous system (pathology, morphology).
  • Obtains a brief history that applies to cardiac disease states and/or arterial/venous disease states.
  • Performs a brief physical exam that applies to cardiac disease states and arterial/venous disease states.
  • Ability to clinically evaluate patients and determine the level of appropriate testing.
  • Uses all current equipment that requires considerable experience, judgment and concentration.
  • Maintains professional rapport with the Medical Director, Medical Staff and Cardiovascular Staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recognizes symptoms of cardiovascular distress.
  • Performs basic CPR, if necessary.
  • Participates in a continuous quality improvement program.
  • Participates in education programs and in-services for departmental personnel.
  • Participates in continuing education by reading journals, attending workshops and seminars.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and calibration procedures on all pertinent equipment, reports equipment malfunctions and maintains a record of these events.
  • Reports concerns to the Cardiovascular Educator.
  • Follows departmental and hospital policies for meeting service expectations providing courteous and respectful treatment of all customers including but not limited to: co-workers, patients, families, medical personnel, and vendors.
  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned by authorized personnel or as required in an emergency
