The City of Lexington is seeking a Police Officer to fill the role of School Resource Officer. This Officer will be a full-time employee of the Police Department, reporting directly to the Chief of Police, and will work directly with the students and staff of Lexington CUSD 7. Priority will be given to candidates who are currently certified as a Police Officer in the State of Illinois by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

Salary range - $55,000 - $73,696.36

Possess a high school diploma or GED
Must have, or be able to obtain and maintain, an Illinois driver's license

Job description
Engage in a purposeful manner with students, staff, and families to advance the core values and intended vision of the School District and the Police Department
Develop expertise in presenting various subjects (particularly in meeting federal and state mandates in drug abuse prevention education) and provide presentations at the request of School District personnel in accordance with the established curriculum.
Become generally aware of Board of Education policies affecting students and employees, and consult with and coordinate SRO activities through the School District administration.
Encourage and facilitate individual and small group discussions about law enforcement related matters with students, faculty, and parents.
Attend meetings to solicit parent and faculty support and understanding of the SRO program and to promote awareness of law enforcement functions.
Be familiar with community agencies which offer assistance to youths and their families such as mental health clinics, drug treatment centers, etc., and make referrals when appropriate.
Collaborate with the School District administration to develop and implement plans and strategies to prevent and / or minimize dangerous situations on or near school property or involving students at school-related activities.
Coordinate with School District administration and be responsible for law enforcement and security activities pertaining to School District facilities pursuant to this Agreement.
Formulate and provide educational crime prevention programs to reduce potential crimes against persons and property in the various school buildings.
Act as a resource to School District administrators in investigating violations related to the school community.
Serve as a positive role model to improve the image of law enforcement deputies in the eyes of students and the community.
Coordinate criminal investigations with school administrators to ensure that police and school interests are protected and that effective alternatives to criminal prosecution are used whenever possible.
Counsel students in special situations, such as being suspected of engaging in criminal misconduct, and answer questions that such students may have about criminal or juvenile law; and
Provide written incident / activity documentation to the School District Superintendent in form, content and duration reasonably requested by the Superintendent.
Perform basic police functions to include answering calls for service; conducting positive proactive contacts with the public; enforcing criminal laws, motor vehicle laws, ordinances and parking regulations; testifying in court; and preparing clear, concise reports.

Ability to quickly learn and apply police methods, practices and procedures to specific situations and to learn and properly apply new methods and ideas
Ability to conduct oneself in a manner above reproach, maintaining a positive image on and off duty
Be free from personal biases or prejudices, which might interfere with police duties
Ability to develop skill in the use of firearms and all police equipment necessary to perform job, and to be able to use force in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law
Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances
Ability to get along with a variety of people, to work well independently and as part of a group or team
Possess the physical strength and agility to meet the physical demands of the position of a police officer as indicated by a physical test and / or physical examination
