Librarian I, Adult Services (Central Branch)

To keep LPL progressing forward, the Librarian I performs professional library work involving the full application of professional library techniques and procedures in one or more specialized library fields including, but not limited to, children's, teen, adult or senior services, or computer training. A Librarian I provides for the care, management, and organization of recorded information, and is skilled in the process of helping others locate and use information. The Librarian I is responsible for providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers and providing programming to meet the needs of the community.
Work may be performed in public and non-public areas; hours of work are dependent upon the service hours of the particular unit. Incumbents are required to work a flexible schedule, which includes evenings, Saturdays and Sundays in support of public service hours.
Work in this class is distinguished from that in paraprofessional library classes by the expertise, which must be applied in dealing properly with library materials, problems, situations and questions, and is differentiated from Librarian II positions, which serve as branch or departmental assistant managers.
Salary Range
46,535.00 - $65,800.00 (starting salary will depend upon skills and experience)
Primary Work Schedule
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9am - 5pm. Wednesday, 11am-7pm.
Every fourth weekend, Saturday 9am - 5pm & Sunday 12 : 30pm - 5pm.
Position may require occasional evening, weekend and out of library hours.

As a Librarian I, a typical day may include the following...
- Interpret and explain LPL policies, procedures and resources to customers and staff.
- Plan, implement and evaluate programs. Depending upon the area of specialty, programming may be geared toward children, teens, adults or seniors.
- Participate in, and represent LPL at, local, regional, state and national professional conferences and events.
- Maintain an awareness of trends and developments within the profession.
- Perform as the person-in-charge periodically in the absence of Senior Managers.
- Serve on library committees and assist with internal projects as needed. The Librarian I should attend all meetings and committees relating to their area of specialty.
- Interact and communicate pleasantly and effectively with diverse customers and staff, maintaining a positive and professional demeanor and providing friendly courteous service.
- Proactively provide information, reference and reader's advisory services to customers of all ages and from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
- Assist customers in locating, selecting and using materials.
- Instruct customers in the use of library resources including the on-line catalog and databases and make appropriate referrals to outside organizations and agencies.
- May develop, schedule, and conduct computer training classes for the public and staff at an LPL work site computer center in basic computer skills and popular software.
- Perform collection development and maintenance of collection based on knowledge of community needs, usage levels, and relevance of materials. Stay current in the knowledge of new materials. Adhere to LPL's Collection Development Policy and Procedures.
- Give book talks, speak before community organizations, lead tours of the library and interact with community groups by presenting programs and participating in joint activities.
- Create bibliographies, display and other promotional activities to merchandise library materials and services.
