POSITION TITLE:   0.8 FTE Orientation and Mobility Specialist

 

FLSA:                   Non Exempt 

 

REPORTS TO AND EVALUATED BY: Director and Assistant Director of Special Education

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  10 month position, non-represented. 184 school days. 

 

30 hours per week with benefits and salary in accordance with an individual employment

contract.


August 26, 2024 start date.

 

$65,000 - $74,000 based on experience.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Instruct students in foundational O&M concepts including sensory and concept development, purposeful movement and community travel
  • Instruct students in the use of low vision and non-visual tools and strategies and technology for maximizing independent travel across all settings
  • Instruct students with known and suspected visual impairments/blindness, based upon assessment, in independent daily living skills and social skills using low vision and non-visual strategies
  • Consult to and support of school-based IEP and 504 team members regarding strategies to reinforce carry over and generalization of orientation and mobility skills across the school day 
  • Consult to and support of family members regarding strategies to reinforce carry over and generalization of orientation and mobility skills across the home and community settings
  • Develop implementation plans for reinforcement and generalization of orientation and mobility skills across the school day
  • Review school buildings, grounds, and learning facilities for access by students with visual impairments/blindness and make recommendations for structural and physical elements to support independent access in these areas and programs
  • Identify and order long canes and adaptive mobility devices for student use across all environments 
  • Provide in-service training to staff in visual impairments/ blindness and student needs
  • Ensure student's visual/non-visual access across the school community life including physical education, field trips, playground/recess, leisure, extracurricular, and process-based events (I.e. school clubs, school dances, graduation ceremonies, etc.)
  • Assess students with known and suspected visual impairments/blindness, vision loss, and/or CVI for informed and maximally independent travel in home, school and community settings, in all areas of independent daily living a to establish realistic and appropriate goals and objectives
  • CPI training will be provided by the district upon hire.

 

Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Orientation and Mobility
  • Certification by Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP)
  • School based experience with preschool and school-aged children
  • Experience with children with multiple impairments
