Summary

To create a flexible ESOL program and a class environment that promotes learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for ESOL education, in accordance with each pupil's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Implements policies and regulations as established by the SC Board of Education and the Lexington Two Board of Trustees.
  • Develops and maintains an engaging instructional climate that is conducive to learning.
  • Administers the screener assessment to identify LEP students
  • Plans and implements targeted instruction in listening, reading, writing and speaking based on diagnosed needs of each individual student and grade level standards.
  • Uses formative assessment data in the ML classroom to monitor student progress and shares the data with the general education teachers.
  • Maintains individual student folders on each ML student (work samples to include beginning and end of the year writing samples, performance based tasks, grades, etc.)
  • Maintains a blue ML folder in the permanent record for each ML student (W-APT and ACCESS test results, student information required by state and federal agencies, original Enrollment Survey (or Home Language Survey), copy of Parent Notification, other information pertinent to language acquisition, and Monitoring Form if student has exited the program).
  • Attends scheduled staff meetings and professional development that teach ML strategies and methodology.
  • Supports students with acculturation and provides general education teachers support in understanding other cultures.
  • Develops an Individual Language Acquisition Plan to establish accommodations and temporary modifications based on a student’s proficiency level.
  • Actively participates in grade level PLC meetings to offer ideas for ML interventions, strategies to support access to content and other instructional strategies.
  • Collaborates with other ML teachers to foster highly effective ML programs and the use of highly effective ML strategies in each school.
  • Coordinates and prepares lesson plans/schedule/tasks for theML Teacher’s Assistant (if he/she has one)
  • Administers the annual English proficiency test (ACCESS)
  • Facilitates frequent and effective home-school communication by coordinating conferences, written communication, parent trainings and other meetings/events
  • Attends IEP and other Special Services meetings regarding ESOL students with special need

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor of Arts degree.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Teaching Certificate and ESOL certification.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts and support students with the development of academic language to gain access to content.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS And ABILITIES

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit. The employee from time to time may be required to lift significant amounts of weight up to and exceeding 25 lbs. Such requirements would include, but are not limited to: lifting students, some of whom are of significant weight and age, and may also include lifting items such as wheelchairs and equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts.

The employee is directly responsible for safety, well being, or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
