What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation Supervisor position at Lextran?
The primary responsibility of the Transportation Supervisor is to oversee transit operations on the street through the supervision and management of Lextran Coach Operators on a daily basis. Transportation Supervisors work as part of a team of Transportation Supervisors to ensure the highest level of safety and customer service is executed for Lextran customers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Supervises, instructs, and conducts routine checks of coach operators relative to schedule adherence, route, proper signage, traffic regulations, safety, operating rules and policies, uniform regulation, general appearance, physical condition, attitude toward the public, proper fare collection, and general demeanor; documents daily activity as required.
- Monitors all phases of on line and end of line operations of bus fleet, directs and coordinates the maintenance of schedules, fare collections, transfer problems, reporting of hazardous conditions and emergencies, and accident investigations.
- Provides on-street supervision of coach operators to ensure the safe provision of transit service, compliance with operating standards, and to assist with problems; re-establishes schedules in case of breakdowns; manages unruly passengers; suggests alternative routing due to accidents.
- Provides assistance, direction and support to coach operators via dispatch, street supervision and scheduling.
- Directs Coach Operators on customer service skills and interactions with passengers
- Responds to calls for assistance on in-service vehicles
- Prepares daily operational reports regarding employee attendance, road failures, accidents, vehicle changes, run numbers, vehicle mileage, farebox problems, etc.
- Provides clear, precise, correct and prompt information to other Lextran personnel and related agencies through in-person communication, voice radio and other electronic devices.
- Conducts initial investigation of accident scenes involving any transit vehicles within the system.
- Responds to emergencies via radio and in-person; ensures safety and supports safety and emergency personnel; requests assistance from emergency personnel when warranted.
- Arranges for a support bus to transport passengers when an accident or problem occurs to eliminate delays and assists in unloading and loading of passengers.
- Communicates with dispatch office to establish special service routing when necessary, for example : parades, special events construction, etc.; requires ability to use a two-way radio.
- Responds to calls concerning trouble on in-service buses and reports same, including mechanical trouble; coordinates with Maintenance supervisors regarding road calls and mechanical issues.
- Verifies performance of in-service vehicles, including headways, running times, frequency needs, passenger’s loads, destinations signs, traffic and time point checks for the entire system.
- Reports condition of on-street route amenities : bus stop areas, bus shelters, broken signposts, broken bus stops signs, overhanging tree limbs, etc. and reports findings to Facilities Manager.
- As primary Scheduler, develops daily work schedules to cover all service routes and services provided by Lextran.
- As a primary Dispatcher, monitors the computer aided dispatch / automatic vehicle location (CAD / AVL) and radio system to maintain contact with transit coach operators to monitor and control on-street service and to respond to emergencies and special needs.
- Understands and maintains compliance with Lextran policies and procedures, collective bargaining agreement, employee handbook and codes of conduct, and Federal, State and local regulations.
