Overview:
The Public Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing programs designed to ensure the safety of the public living and working around utility-owned electrical and gas facilities. This includes promoting and achieving safety awareness among key stakeholders such as schools, first responders, contractors, and community members. The role involves developing new safety programs and overseeing existing ones like the High Voltage training demonstration, Mini-City, and PowerPoint presentations to educate about electricity and natural gas safety. The specialist also performs various investigations for electric, and gas events as needed, in support of LG&E / KU claims group.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain a strategic plan for achieving public safety education goals in collaboration with the Manager - Public Safety.
    Lead the company’s public safety image from an educational and community relations perspective.
    Proactively seek opportunities to promote public safety awareness among key stakeholders and oversee all third-party communication outreach and contracts.
  • Deliver electrical education programs (e.g., High Voltage demonstrations, lectures, seminars) and mass communications to the public, fire departments, police, contractors, municipal and government officials, schools, and customers across the LGE/KU footprint, which may require working after hours. Strong public speaking skills is required.
  • Perform on-site investigations of overhead electric contacts to LG&E / KU facilities, gathering necessary documentation in support of the claims team.

  • Oversee the substation fire response protocol in coordination with local fire departments, county emergency management agencies, and the utility.
  • Educate fire department emergency responders on safe work practices in and around electric facilities.
  • Support LGE/KU emergency management in a storm role as assigned, which may require working after-hours.
  • Develop and oversee public safety communications initiatives such as videos, internet sites, brochures, and presentations.
  • Implement best practices for disseminating public safety messages and track their effectiveness across the LG&E and KU service territories.
  • Represent the company with key industry agencies on public safety initiatives.
  • Lead the process of tracking public safety communication and outreach event records, ensuring system enhancements as needed.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the Manager - Public Safety.

Qualifications:
Education Requirements
  • Associate's Degree in Safety Management, Communications, Electrical Technology, or a related technical field and 5 years of experience in safety operations, electric and gas preferred, utility construction or operation, or a related technical field, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year-for-year basis.

Experience Requirements
  • 5 years experience in safety operations, electric and gas preferred, utility construction or operation, or a related technical field, OR
  • Strong public speaking skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Formal incident investigation experience and/or training (e.g., Taproot, Apollo RCA).
  • Working knowledge of National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and OSHA 1910.269.
