Purpose Statement
The job of Media Center Assistant is done for the purpose/s of maintaining media collection and medial equipment at school site; performing clerical functions related to resources (Media Center and instructional), and supporting students, staff and other personnel with activities associated with the Media Center.
Essential Functions
- Assists teachers, students, and other personnel for the purpose of identifying and obtaining resource (paper/electronic) materials, software and/or technology equipment for instructional and/or recreational use in the classroom or Media Center.
- Coordinates the use of a variety of resource (paper/electronic) materials and media equipment (e.g. computers, cameras, etc.) for the purpose of providing access to equipment and related materials.
- Manages a variety of materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
- Monitors students while in Media Center (e.g. behavior, website access, etc.) for the purpose of creating a safe and positive learning environment, upholding Acceptable Use Agreements and/or communicating issues to faculty.
- Monitors status of collection (e.g. repairing and/or discarding books and materials, previewing materials, shelving, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of resources (paper/electronic) materials and communicating needs.
- Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information, developing knowledge required to perform job functions and meet district objectives.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance of Media Center technology equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
- Processes new and/or returned resource (paper/electronic) materials, periodicals and/or media (e.g. checking order accuracy, storing, shelving, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining collection or technology.
- Provides support on the use of media equipment for the purpose of ensuring equipment is utilized properly and in a safe manner.
- Supports instructional program and lesson plans under the direction of classroom teacher or Media Specialist for the purpose of assisting the teacher/Media Specialist in improving students' academic success.
- Uses appropriate software on district computers, distributes instructional materials (e.g. textbooks, Media Center resources (paper/electronic), supplies, equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing students with necessary items and supporting the teachers in the classroom.
- Uses appropriate software on district computer system and communication equipment (e.g. Internet bookmarks for company catalogs, purchase orders, email accounts, Acceptable Use Agreements, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating communication.
Other Functions
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; performing standard clerical procedures; preparing and maintaining accurate records; utilizing equipment required for book repair.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: elements of Media Center operation, age appropriate children's literature, concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: working with frequent interruptions; meeting deadlines and schedules; adapting to changing work priorities; displaying mechanical aptitude and working as part of a team; adhering to district policies; and regular attendance except when allowed leave.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
