What are the responsibilities and job description for the Batch & Furnace Manager position at Libbey?
The Batch & Furnace Manager is responsible for receiving, weighing, melting, conditioning, and delivering up to 460 tons of tableware-quality glass per day through 5 furnaces to 11 forming shops. After forming, the Manager is responsible for annealing up to 65,000 dozen multiple-shaped tableware items per day. The above is to be accomplished while minimizing energy consumption, production losses, and manufacturing costs. The Manager also coordinates equipment maintenance, makes equipment recommendations to improve efficiency and glass quality, and maintains a cooperative union-management environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Issue monthly raw material delivery schedules.
Receive delivery and unload into raw material silos or pole barn.
Maintain ideal glass color, especially crystal, on all operating furnaces.
Produce glass with a constant density day-to-day and furnace-to-furnace.
Coordinate the efficient collection, processing, and recycling of all cullet, while minimizing contamination.
Melt and homogenize up to 460 tons of glass per day in 5 furnaces while maximizing fuel efficiency and manufacturing good glass color.
Supply 11 forming machines with properly conditioned glass at the desired temperature and consistent glass level.
Order all frits and produce up to 30 different glass colors in 8 colorant forehearths.
Foster a Safety First Culture
Heat-up furnaces to operating temperatures, fill with glass, and prepare systems for glass production.
Maintain the efficient operation and accurate temperature control of 13 annealing lehrs.
Repair and maintain instrumentation systems in the Batch, Furnace, and Lehr Departments.
Make recommendations on capital equipment changes and/or operation processes in the Batch, Furnace, Lehr, and Instrumentation Department.
Maintain an open working relationship between the labor union and management.
REQUIREMENTS:
BS Engineering or similar focus, required
3-5 years experience as a batch & furnace foreman and/or engineer
2-4 years experience supervisor experience, in a union environment
Knowledge of soda lime glass composition, raw materials, properties, & defects
Knowledge of glass furnace operations
Knowledge of combustion system operation and control logic on system furnaces, forehearths, & lehrs
Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and in a team environment and interact with all levels of the organization
Ability to work in a demanding and fast paced environment
Ability to handle multiple priorities and multitask effectively
The ability to effectively problem-solve
