What are the responsibilities and job description for the Activity Director position at Liberty Park Assisted Living and Memory Care?
Responsible for planning and organizing individual and group activities to meet the day-to-day social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual needs of residents. Communicates available programs to residents and encourages participation. The Lifestyle Director assists the direct care staff in keeping the residents involved in the unit socially, cognitively, and recreationally. The Lifestyle Director insures that scheduled programming is carried out seven days per week. Some weekends and holidays are required. On call duties required.
REPORTS TO: Executive Director and/or Wellness Director
REPONSIBILITIES:
1. Adheres to and conveys a philosophy that supports the dignity, privacy, independence, choice, and individuality of residents. Plans, implements, and supervises activities to suit a variety of interests and skill levels for the residents using resident comments and input. Activities may include, but are not limited to: parties, games, weekly exercises, church services, book reading and clubs, crafts, baking and cooking, outside entertainment, travel and transportation, special activities at holiday, fundraisers for specific projects, and resident birthdays and anniversaries.
2. Conducts an assessment with each resident to determine those activities in which the resident would be most interested in pursuing and/or participating.
3. Summarizes information obtained from each resident’s activity and interest profile to determine which activities are of interest to the greatest number of residents. Plans and organizes programs, events and activities around residents’ interests.
4. Participates in the resident service planning process to provide input as to each resident’s involvement in his/her areas of interest.
5. Develops and maintains a volunteer program.
6. Leads and/or oversees individual and group activities on a daily basis, encouraging resident participation.
7. Documents resident participation in group and/or individual social / recreational programs.
8. Develops and distributes monthly activity schedules to residents and posted for easy reference by residents. These should be posted in an appropriate time frame, monthly by the end of the previous month and weekly by Sunday of the previous week. At least eight hours of programming daily must be noted.
9. Assist Marketing Director in developing and distributing a newsletter on a monthly basis for residents, family members and selected referral sources.
10. Acknowledges resident birthdays, anniversaries, and special accomplishments by planning a special event and/or giving the resident a card, note, or small gift.
11. Orders needed supplies (e.g., art and craft supplies, party supplies, etc.). Oversees the activity
budget to ensure that costs are maintained within budgetary guidelines.
12. Maintains the activity storage area in a neat, clean manner. Picks up supplies after each activity and returns furniture to its original position.
13. Provides instructions and supplies for other employees, residents or volunteers to assist with group or individual activities.
14. Takes pictures of Community events, parties and other special occasions.
15. Maintains and updates information pertinent to the social / activity program, including community resources, entertainment, guest speakers, volunteers, and resident and staff birthdays/anniversaries.
16. Makes arrangements for local groups or organizations to hold meetings, performances, and/or special events at the Community.
17. Organizes outings into the local community to locations of interest to residents; ensures that sufficient staff and/or volunteers participate in the outings; makes arrangements for the provision of needed resident services during the time of the outing.
18. Organize and assist with Resident Council meetings by playing a key role in their monthly meeting agenda.
19. Maintains a sign-up schedule for regular transportation to doctor appointments, bank(s) and shopping and assists residents in making other transportation arrangements as needed.
20. Drives residents in the Community van to outings, doctor appointments, etc. as needed/requested.
21. Plans special “theme” days or months around holidays, seasons, or recognized days such as Father’s or Mother’s Day.
22. Pairs interested staff members with residents based on common interests to facilitate the implementation of resident interests.
23. Assists the Assistant Director in the orientation of newly hired staff. Trains all staff on the Pinnacle Senior Living activity program, its purposes and goals.
24. Provides assistance in providing resident services (e.g., assistance with personal care, meal service, etc.) as needed/requested.
25. Reports any abuse, suspected abuse or alleged abuse to the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Enjoys working with the elderly; relates well to seniors.
2. Able to lead and motivate people; excellent interpersonal skills.
3. Good planning and organizational skills.
4. Able to communicate well, both orally and in writing.
5. Self-starter; able to carry out diverse duties with minimal supervision.
6. Enjoys thinking of new ideas; is creative and resourceful.
7. Good computer skills (i.e. MS Word, Printshop, etc.).
8. Professional appearance and attitude.
9. Holds a valid driver’s license of the appropriate type and a driving record which meets the Community insurance standards.
10. Must be able to meet physical demands of lifting and moving over 50 pounds, walking and standing for long periods of time.
11. All general staffing requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be 18 years of age or older. High school diploma or equivalent GED. Some college education preferred. Must have at least one year’s experience in conducting group activities. Experience in working with the elderly preferred.
