The Liberty Theatre, affectionately known as the "Heart of Astoria," is a nonprofit, historic performing arts venue dedicated to enriching the cultural landscape of our community. We are primarily a "roadhouse" presenter, meaning we host touring artists and productions rather than producing in-house shows. Our programming focuses heavily on live music, with additional performances in comedy, dance, theatre, and community events. We are currently planning a major stage renovation that will enhance our technical capabilities, ensuring the Liberty Theatre remains a premier destination for performers and audiences alike.

Position Summary:
The Technical Director is responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of theatre operations and productions at the Liberty Theatre. This role ensures the successful execution of events by managing lighting, sound, set design, and stage management. The Technical Director collaborates with performers, renters, staff, and volunteers to deliver high-quality productions that meet the artistic and technical standards of the theatre.
Key Responsibilities: Technical Operations Management:
- Oversee the daily technical operations of the theatre, including lighting, sound, set design, and stage management.
- Design and implement lighting plots, sound systems, and staging configurations tailored to each event’s specific requirements.
- Ensure all technical equipment is properly maintained, repaired, and updated as necessary.
Production Planning and Coordination:
- Collaborate with performers, production teams, and renters to assess and fulfill technical requirements for upcoming events.
- Develop and manage production schedules, including load-in, setup, rehearsals, performances, strike, and load-out.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for technical inquiries and coordination during events.
Team Leadership and Supervision:
- Recruit, train, and supervise technical staff, including volunteers and contracted personnel.
- Retain and oversee outside contractors when additional equipment or labor is required for events.
- Foster a collaborative and safe working environment, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and industry standards.
Budgeting and Resource Management:
- Prepare and manage budgets for technical aspects of productions, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
- Maintain inventory of technical equipment and order specialized supplies.
- Advise management on future improvements, development needs, and capital purchases of equipment and materials.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable working at heights and using ladders.
- Ability to move and work in confined spaces, such as catwalks and backstage areas.
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven experience as a Technical Director or in a similar role within a performing arts venue.
- Comprehensive knowledge of technical theatre operations, including lighting, sound, rigging, and set construction.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience supervising staff and volunteers.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the theatre’s schedule.
