Shipboard Valve Technician

Position Summary:
As a Shipboard Valve Technician, you will test, repair and overhaul valves and assist other trades in the Valve Shop as needed. You will provide technical support on shipboard machinery systems as a subject matter expert. You will use technical documents (JFMM, Instructions, NSTM's, Military standards, Test memos, Test Standards, Drawings and Technical Manuals) that contain information required to accomplish work. This position will be under limited supervision.

Contract Requirements:
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a DBIDS and maintain base access.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoot, disassemble, inspect, repair, overhaul, and test valves to include those used in the following systems:
    • Lube Oil
    • Fuel
    • Firemain
    • Potable Water
    • Freshwater
    • Sonar
    • AFFF, and
    • Other various shipboard systems
  • Valve types include; butterfly, gate, globe, check including swing-check, pressure reducing, Cla-Val, relief, Marotta fuel and air manifolds, and Leslie regulating and solenoid-operated pilot valves (SOPVs).
  • Provide training to ships' force personnel on proper valve overhaul procedures under Fleet Valve Services.
  • Communicate with ships' force and shop management regarding required equipment for in-depth troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Perform relief valve testing using pop test stand in accordance with ships' Preventative Maintenance System (PMS) requirements for all shipboard systems.
  • Troubleshoot, disassemble, inspect, repair, overhaul, and test Vertical Launch System (VLS) Deluge Valves in compliance with requirements of Formal Work Packages (FWP)s and other approved technical references.
  • Troubleshoot, disassemble, inspect, repair, overhaul, and test Marotta fuel and air manifold valves.
  • Utilize shop test stand to test and properly set manifold reliefs and regulators to correct system parameters provided in FWPs, technical manuals, and other approved technical references.
  • Perform functional flow testing, troubleshoot and repair Self-contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) harnesses.
  • Perform hydrostatic testing of SCBA cylinders in accordance with FWPs, equipment technical manuals, and other approved technical references.
  • Inspect, disassemble, overhaul, and hydrostatically test fossil-fueled boiler burner barrel and assemblies in accordance with FWPs, equipment technical manuals, and other approved technical references.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the following certifications, as required by specific area of support. (Training timeline and support will be provided)
    • PQS 301 Craftsman Qualification
    • Department of Transportation (DOT) Hydrostatic Testing of SCBA Cylinders certification (shop will coordinate and schedule in-house training)
    • Scott Safety Certification of Functional Flow and Repair of SCBA Harnesses (shop will coordinate and schedule in-house training
    • In-Service Engineering Agent (ISEA) Certification for Vertical Launch System (VLS) Deluge Valve Overhaul, Repair and Test (shop will coordinate and schedule in-house training)
    • Category 3 Crane Operator, required to position valves in camelbacks

Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience:
  • Minimum 4 years work experience on Navy ships

Physical Demands and Expectations:
  • Ability to speak, read, hear and write, with or without assistance
  • Ability to use phone and computer systems, copier, fax and other office equipment
  • Ability to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs. in weight
  • Frequent standing, sitting, crawling, kneeling, stooping, crouching, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, handling, feeling with hands, reaching with arms, work on scaffolding, work in inclement weather
  • Manual and finger dexterity; able to grasp, manipulate, assemble small objects
  • Able to work onboard navy ships
  • Ability to wear a mask for prolonged periods of time
  • Noise conditions range from very quiet to very noisy
