Fab Lab Instructors, are essential to the Life Male STEAM Academy.
The primary function of the teaching staff is to develop classrooms where students’ cultural backgrounds are seen as assets and their potential is uncovered daily. Fab Lab Instructors will be subject matter experts who facilitate instruction for students according to their educational needs, abilities, and promote their attainment in designated subject matter or grade level areas in accordance with the curriculum and/or other educational programs adopted by the Board of Directors. Math Teachers are expected to create and deliver engaging, culturally responsive lessons to diverse groups of students at all levels; promote enthusiasm for learning and for all subjects; adhere to national and state standards; maintain detailed records of student performance; and maintain classroom order.
The Fab Lab Educator will be responsible for leading and managing the Fab Lab, a space designed to foster creativity, innovation, hands-on learning, engineering and problem-solving skills. The instructor will guide students in using a variety of tools and technologies, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and other digital fabrication equipment. The instructor will deliver teaching on any technology-related learning. The instructor will be responsible for any technology-related in-house updates and repairs. The role involves developing and delivering a curriculum that is engaging, ensuring the safe and effective use of lab equipment, and promoting a culture of innovation and collaboration among students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Aid in development and implementation of a curriculum that incorporates STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) principles and aligns with educational standards.
- Instruct students in the use of Fab Lab equipment and software, including 3D modeling, digital fabrication, and electronics.
- Develop project-based learning experiences that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
- Foster a creative and inclusive environment where students feel empowered to explore and innovate.
- Manage the daily operations of the Fab Lab, including scheduling, maintenance, and inventory of materials and equipment.
- Ensure all safety protocols are followed and students are trained in proper safety procedures.
- Collaborate with other educators to integrate Fab Lab projects into broader curricular goals.
- Provide guidance and support for student projects, both during class and in extracurricular activities.
- Organize and lead workshops, events, and competitions related to fab lab activities.
- Maintain all technology-based equipment and supplies, and coordinate repairs and upgrades as needed.
- Stay current with new technologies, tools, and trends in digital fabrication and maker education.
- Facilitate partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and educational institutions to enhance the Fab Lab program.
- Document and showcase student projects and achievements through displays, presentations, and digital media.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Share best practices and innovations with colleagues through meetings and professional networks.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, STEM, Engineering, Design, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Teaching certification or licensure for the appropriate grade levels, if required by the state.
- Experience in a makerspace, Fab Lab, or similar hands-on learning environment.
- Proficiency with digital fabrication tools and software (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, CAD software).
- Strong understanding of STEM concepts and the ability to teach these to students.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Passion for technology, innovation, and experiential learning.
