Job Title: Remote Direct Support Professional

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Summary

This position provides desired and necessary supports to persons with disabilities, via remote supports, so that they may achieve the highest level of independent living possible within their community and reduce dependence on in-home staffing. This position’s workstation is physically located at an administrative office with the potential to work at the residences of persons served in the event physical assistance is required. Supervision and direction is received from the Program Supervisor and/or other staff members who review work through reports and direct observations.

Basic Functions And General Responsibilities

  • Provides remote supports for activities of daily living and monitors the electronic remote supports system should the individual need assistance, have questions, or require emergency services.
  • Responsible for observing and reporting information concerning the physical, mental, and behavioral condition of the persons served and for assisting in the maintenance of necessary records and reports to document these observations.
  • Provides passive remote supports for up to 16 individuals at a time.
  • Provides general protective oversight through remote supports by monitoring system and sensor alerts.
  • Responds to requests for contact through the electronic remote supports system. Clearly and appropriately communicates with persons served. Must be able to respond to some requests in person within established guidelines.
  • Provides 1-1 remote support coaching, upon request or as directed by the individual’s support plan.
  • Communicates timely with the appropriate supervisory staff in the event of crisis or medical emergency.
  • Observes, reports, and assists in recording changes in the physical, emotional, behavioral status of persons served and documents progress on the outcomes listed in personal plans.
  • Completes appropriate documentation for remote supports system events, general communication and/or other required documentation within established guidelines.
  • Assists in the orientation of new employees.
  • Takes appropriate action in case of fire and/or disaster. Encourages the development and maintenance of a safe environment for persons served in a residential setting including developing plans for evacuation assistance in case of emergency, using the on-call phone; and training in securing emergency services such as the police, the fire department, and an ambulance.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to adequately utilize technological devices necessary for remote supports or other assistive technology devices.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and discretion.
  • Ability to work varied and flexible hours, accept and adapt to changes in assignments, methods, policies, etc.
  • Ability to work in various locations during a particular shift.
  • Ability to work with and respect persons with disabilities and advocate for their rights.
  • Ability to learn and apply crisis intervention and behavior support techniques.
  • Ability to administer oral, rectal, vaginal, optic, ophthalmic, nasal, topical medications and insulin injections after completing certification.
  • Ability to teach basic skills and model adaptive behaviors at home and in the community.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean and agreeable environment for the persons served.
  • Ability to accurately report and record observations.
  • Ability to pass with satisfactory performance CPR, First Aid, and Behavior Intervention training.
  • Ability to maintain a record of punctuality and attendance.

Physical Expectations

  • This position requires extended periods of walking and standing with some periods of sitting which is dependent upon the needs and activities of the individuals supported. It may require light to heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds independently, and occasional stooping, kneeling, bending, and/or climbing stairs depending on the needs of the individual supported.
  • The position will require occasional physical intervention if confronted by a person displaying combative or potentially dangerous behavior.
  • Driving an agency or personal vehicle is a part of community integration for the individuals we support.

Working Conditions

Office/home environment with noises from appliances, telephones, and occasional small machinery (lawn mower, etc.). May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and/or infectious diseases. Occasionally, prolonged hours or unusual chores to meet the unexpected needs of the individuals (i.e. medical and/or behavioral).

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years of age and provide proof of high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English – both in writing and orally.
  • Must not have been convicted of any disqualifying felony and must not have been substantiated for abuse or neglect in the state of Missouri, as recorded by the Department of Mental Health’s Employee Disqualification List.
  • Must have reliable transportation for transporting clients.
  • Must demonstrate safe practices in all areas and exemplify positive professional standards.
  • Must obtain a Class E driver’s license during new hire orientation– must carry minimum coverage applicable by law for auto insurance
  • Must Receive Seasonal Flu Vaccination
