Lifebanc, is the federally designated organ, eye and tissue recovery organization that serves 20 counties in Northeast Ohio. Put simply, we facilitate and coordinate organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation in our community and educate the public on the importance of our mission. Position Description:
This position is responsible for the facilitation of the organ donation process by providing clinical support through donor evaluation, donor medical management, organ placement and recovery in compliance with CMS and AOPO standards.
Essential Functions:
Under the direction of the Manager/designee and/or Administrator on Call (AOC), conducts on site evaluation of all organ referrals and determines donor suitability to maximize donation opportunities as required by UNOS, CMS and AOPO standards and Lifebanc policies. Covers assigned shifts on the organ procurement schedule to assure adequate coverage on a 24-hour basis including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Responds onsite to referring hospitals within Lifebanc’s service area within the specified timeframe.
- Reviews and evaluates the patient’s medical chart, including the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), to determine donation eligibility and suitability.
- Evaluates the patient’s neurological status, conferring with medical staff caring for the patient.
- Completes the appropriate Lifebanc referral documentation including electronic data entry.
- Provides documentation in the patient’s chart regarding Lifebanc’s evaluation of the patient’s suitability for donation and informs the hospital staff of Lifebanc’s plan for follow up.
- Educates hospital staff on specific criteria that must be reported to Lifebanc within an appropriate time frame to ensure donation opportunities are timely.
Facilitates the coordination of the medical management of the donor, following established guidelines as well as medical director guidance to maintain adequate organ perfusion and oxygenation to maximize organ potential.
- Medically manages pediatric and adult organ donors as outlined in Lifebanc’s Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of hemodynamics including respiratory and ventilator management and fluid and electrolytes balance.
- Provides written orders as outlined in Lifebanc’s Standing Orders.
- Draws and/or assists in donor blood draw for serology testing, tissue typing and donor evaluation.
- Arrange for transportation of lab samples to various laboratories.
- Collaborates with health care team, Lifebanc Medical Director, Manager/designee and/or AOC.
Knowledge of and the ability to apply local and national organ allocation policies and procedures; ability to access UNOS database and to arrange proper and reliable transportation.
- Coordinates the recovery of organs for transplant according to Lifebanc policy.
- Assist the local transplant center once an organ has been accepted, including contacting local labs and preservation and arranging transportation.
- Schedules, coordinates and facilitates the OR timing and recovery at the donor hospital and/or Lifebanc organ recovery suite.
- Effectively communicates and collaborates with healthcare teams to ensure the successful recovery of organs for transplant.
Help the local transplants centers in facilitating the import process in compliance with UNOS and Lifebanc policies.
- Complete appropriate import documentation.
Attends, participates and as requested, makes formal presentations at all mandatory Lifebanc meetings and events.
- Partners with Hospital Services as requested to provide education support to donor hospitals through in-services, donor council participation and case reviews.
Qualifications:
- A Registered Nurse (RN) with a degree or diploma from an accredited nursing school with at least two years’ experience in a critical care setting, or as an organ procurement coordinator or
- A Respiratory Therapist with at least two years’ experience in a critical care setting, or as an organ procurement coordinator or
- Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC) with at least one year’s experience as an organ or tissue procurement coordinator or
- A master’s degree in Transplantation and Donation Sciences.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) required; certification must be approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Critical care knowledge to assess hemodynamic values, pulmonary status, and lab values as well as demonstrate critical thinking to implement treatment to optimize donation.
- Ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, multitask and to demonstrate effective decision making within the scope of assigned authority.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including medical staff, hospital personnel and donor families.
- Ability to collaborate with multiple members of the health care team to effectively manage an organ donor.
- Physical stamina, including the ability to function at full capacity for hours consecutively.
