Lifebanc, is the federally designated organ, eye and tissue recovery organization that serves 20 counties in Northeast Ohio. Put simply, we facilitate and coordinate organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation in our community and educate the public on the importance of our mission. Position Description:
This position is responsible for providing tissue recovery services, enabling the organization to optimize donor and donor family wishes and to maximize the supply of safe transplantable tissues to those in need while meeting regulatory standards.
Essential Functions:
Responsible for assigned shifts on the tissue recovery schedule to assure consistent coverage at all times and to maximize procurement opportunities that provide quality tissue for transplant.
- Performs all aspects of tissue recovery including both surgical recovery of eyes and tissues, while maintaining set department benchmarks for documentation, culturing, and error rates.
- Reviews authorization/disclosure forms to verify identity and for proper documentation of tissues for recovery while following appropriate age criteria.
- Performs medical record review and physical assessment, draws blood for infectious disease testing to evaluate the donor suitability for transplantation.
- Responsible to ensure all recovery steps are completed according to standard operating procedures and quality standards.
- Follows proper prepping/draping procedures and aseptic scrubbing, gowning, and gloving prior to recovery to control contamination and cross contamination.
- Performs thorough culturing, labeling, and wrapping of all tissues.
- Verifies that all labels, blood specimen, and cultures are completed correctly.
Performs follow-up documentation and communication on recovered donor cases to support quality processes.
Provides support to the department through new hire training according to established standard operating procedures.
Qualifications:
- Degree, diploma or certificate in allied health, life sciences or nursing is preferred (Surgical Technician, EMT/Paramedic, Embalmer and LPN).
- Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and universal precautions.
- Ability to lift over 50 pounds with assistance.
Lifebanc operates 24 hours a day and this position requires flexibility and the ability to work independently and be flexible in a dynamic team environment without direct supervision. Prior operating room experience is preferred and the ability to stand or work for greater than 16 hours at a given time. The qualified candidate must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, a safe driving record, current auto insurance and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
