LifeStream is a behavioral health and social services organization that provides high-quality treatment, education, care management, rehabilitation, child welfare, primary care and homeless services to children, adolescents, and adults. Located in Central Florida, LifeStream primarily serves the residents of Lake, Citrus and Sumter Counties, with additional programs located in Orange, Marion, Hernando counties.
JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant is responsible for directly supporting a healthcare department or unit by completing administrative and clinical tasks for a physician’s office, hospital, outpatient clinic, or other healthcare facility i.e., clinic, medical director, clinic staff (RN), outpatient practitioners. The duties vary with the location, specialty, and size or complexity of the practice. A successful Medical Assistant will be well versed in psychiatry, capable of understanding mental status, and the use of psychotropic medications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification with or without an accommodation. Administrative Duties may include:
- Entering/maintaining electronic health records
- Answering telephones and greeting patients with outstanding customer service
- Updating and filing patient medical records
- Coding and filling out insurance forms
- Scheduling appointments
- Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services
- Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping
Clinical Duties may include:
- Taking medical histories, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination
- Assisting the physician during exams
- Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, drawing blood, performing basic laboratory tests
- Instructing patients about medication and special diets
- Preparing and administering medications as directed by a physician, authorizing prescription refills as directed
- Taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures and changing dressings
Patient Liaison:
- Medical assistants are instrumental in helping patients feel at ease in the physician’s office and often explain the physician's instructions
