Our programs include Breathe, an after-school arts program for grades 5-12. We aim to foster artistic expression, leadership, and social skills through dance, music, visual arts, and creative writing.
Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Teaching Artist/Dance Instructor to join our community arts program. The ideal candidate will be responsible for planning and leading engaging dance instruction while creating a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment for youth and adults with developmental disabilities. This role requires a commitment to mentorship, personal development, and community engagement.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop and implement engaging dance curriculum for diverse ability levels.
- Demonstrate dance techniques and methods to students.
- Observe and provide constructive feedback to enhance students' dance skills and confidence.
- Cultivate a safe and supportive learning environment—physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
- Encourage self-expression and creativity while building students' technical proficiency.
- Provide positive reinforcement, constructive criticism, and acknowledge achievements.
- Ensure all students, regardless of ability level, feel included and valued.
- Engage with underserved youth and adults with special needs populations.
- Act as a positive role model and mentor to program participants.
- Assist with special events and community outreach initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and program staff to enhance program effectiveness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Passion for dance and community engagement.
- Experience in dance instruction (hip-hop preferred).
- Ability to work with culturally diverse communities, including youth and individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment.
- Flexibility, creativity, and a team-oriented mindset.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries while providing supportive services.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Willingness to undergo a criminal history background check.
- Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with special needs populations and adaptive dance instruction.
- Background in community outreach programs.
- Experience in arts-based social impact programming.
