(LMI) is a growing electrical construction contractor with approximately 140 employees operating across 5 locations in multiple states, including Maryland (MD), Washington, D.C. (DC), Virginia (VA), North Carolina (NC), South Carolina (SC), West Virginia (WV), and Florida (FL). We specialize in delivering high-quality electrical services for residential, commercial, and industrial clients. We also operate CDL vehicles and conduct routine drug testing as part of our commitment to safety and regulatory compliance. We are seeking an experienced HR Manager to lead and oversee all aspects of human resources practices and processes. This position will ensure a high-performance culture that emphasizes safety, quality, productivity, goal attainment, and the ongoing development of a superior workforce.
Position Summary
The HR Manager will be responsible for the full range of human resources functions, including talent acquisition, employee relations, benefits administration, training and development, performance management, and multi-state compliance. This role will partner with executive management to plan and implement strategic HR initiatives that support business objectives. Due to the multi-location and multi-state nature of our company, the HR Manager will occasionally travel to our various sites to support managers and employees in person.
Key Responsibilities
- Talent Acquisition and Workforce Planning
- Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract qualified electricians, project managers, drivers with CDL endorsements, office staff, and other specialized talent.
- Coordinate job postings, screen resumes, conduct interviews, and manage the selection process.
- Partner with department heads to create and maintain workforce plans that align with current and future business needs.
- Build relationships with trade schools, professional organizations, and community groups to maintain a robust pipeline of skilled candidates.
- Onboarding and Offboarding
- Oversee the new hire onboarding process, including orientation, introduction to company policies, safety protocols, and job expectations.
- Ensure a smooth transition for employees exiting the company by managing exit interviews, final documentation, and feedback loops to improve retention.
- Employee Relations
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee questions regarding policies, procedures, benefits, and conflict resolution.
- Investigate and resolve employee complaints, disputes, and policy violations, ensuring fairness and consistency.
- Manage unemployment claims by promptly responding to state agencies, compiling necessary documentation, and representing the company at appeals or hearings as needed.
- Promote a positive workplace culture by collaborating with supervisors and managers on engagement initiatives and recognition programs.
- Compensation and Benefits Administration
- Manage and administer compensation structures, including salary, wages, and incentive programs aligned with industry benchmarks.
- Oversee company-sponsored benefits programs (medical, dental, retirement, etc.), ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations across multiple states.
- Work with external benefits providers and brokers to optimize cost and value for both the company and employees.
- Performance Management
- Develop and implement performance management processes, including goal setting, performance reviews, and corrective action plans.
- Provide guidance to managers on coaching and mentoring strategies that encourage employee growth and productivity.
- Identify and address performance gaps, working collaboratively with leadership to develop improvement strategies.
- Training and Development
- Identify training needs across the organization and create or source relevant training programs (e.g., safety, technical skills, leadership development).
- Coordinate ongoing professional development, ensuring compliance with required certifications, licenses, and driving qualifications for CDL holders.
- Maintain training records and measure the effectiveness of training initiatives.
- Compliance and Policy Management
- Ensure compliance with all relevant employment laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, OSHA, EEO) in MD, DC, VA, NC, SC, WV, and FL.
- Maintain and regularly update the Employee Handbook and HR policies to reflect current legislation and company values.
- Oversee DOT and CDL compliance, including driver qualification files, hours-of-service requirements, and random drug and alcohol testing programs.
- Collaborate with LMI’s Safety Manager to limit worker’s compensation claims through proactive accident prevention, safety training, claims management, and return-to-work programs.
- Lead internal audits and implement corrective measures to meet regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- HR Data Management and Reporting
- Oversee HRIS systems to maintain accurate employee records, including payroll, attendance, and leave management.
- Generate regular reports on turnover, headcount, training hours, and other key HR metrics; present findings and recommendations to senior management.
- Leverage data analytics to drive strategic decision-making and continuous improvement in HR practices.
- Strategic Partnerships and Culture Building
- Partner with the leadership team to align HR strategies with business objectives, ensuring the HR department adds value to overall company performance.
- Champion a culture that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and safety while supporting the organization’s core values and mission.
- Serve as a culture ambassador, exemplifying professional conduct, teamwork, and integrity.
- Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor any HR support staff, including recruiters and coordinators.
- Establish goals, provide performance feedback, and create development plans for HR team members.
- Collaborate closely with managers at each location to ensure consistent HR practices and address location-specific issues.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree or HR certification (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR) is a plus.
- Experience:
- 10 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
- Experience in the construction, trades, or contracting industries strongly preferred.
- Proven track record of supporting multi-location and multi-state operations, including DOT/CDL-related requirements.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in HRIS software, payroll systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Solid understanding of labor laws and regulations (federal, state, and local) in MD, DC, VA, NC, SC, WV, and FL, as well as DOT regulations for CDL drivers.
