Job Title: RESOURCE SPECIALIST

Supervised by/Reports to: Director of Special Education

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals:

  • To provide on-going support to special and general education instructional personnel delivering services to eligible students.
  • To create an instructional learning environment that enables all students to master skills appropriate to age, grade level, and individual capacity.
  • To implement successful and effective special education instructional programs and related services for the school system.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Special Education desired.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited university preferred.
  • Valid Alabama teacher certificate in special education.
  • Minimum of three (3) years successful classroom experience.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education law and procedures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of designated students and system programs.
  • Ability to develop training activities, supervise teachers, and demonstrate professionalism and high standards of performance in program leadership.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Clarifies and provides assistance in implementing federal, state, and system policies and procedures related to special education programs and services.
  • Provides assistance in the processes involved in the identification of special education students and the development of legally defensible Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Provides internal monitoring of the processes involved in special education.
  • Maintains frequent contact with system special education services and school staff to provide support with instruction, curriculum, transition planning, classroom management, behavior intervention, and other relevant needs.
  • Contributes specialized information toward resolving conflicts and crisis situations.
  • Develops and presents in-service training for teachers and administrators or other designated personnel.
  • Assists with data collection and completion of reports required by various state and federal agencies.
  • Assists with data collection related to student instruction.
  • Monitors implementation of teacher professional development training.
  • Assists special education personnel in completion of follow-up diagnostic assessments.
  • Keeps abreast of all aspects of special education and pursues appropriate professional development activities.
  • Researches, investigates, and answers special education-related questions posed by administrators and regular and special education teachers.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and community/agency representatives.
  • Responds effectively to parent concerns.
  • Collaborates with other agencies to coordinated services for special education students.
  • Demonstrates appropriate organizational and time management skills.
  • Supervises and evaluates staff assigned in accordance with school system procedures and schedules.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Works cooperatively and productively with the Superintendent and other administrative staff to ensure the system’s vision, goals and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame.
  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Attends conferences and training sessions to improve skills and programs.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • Uses effective collaboration skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Serves as needed on committee, task forces, or as a delegate of the school system.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties as directed by Supervisor(s).

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School’s District Salary Schedule.
