Job Title: ITINERANT SCHOOL NURSE - RN
Supervised by/Reports to: Lead Nurse, Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Goals:
- To direct and provide healthcare services, health education, and healthcare information for the school system.
Qualifications:
- Valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in hospital or community health setting.
- Any other certificate required by state law.
- Valid CPR Card.
- Valid Alabama driver’s license and the ability to have access to appropriate transportation to travel between work sites throughout the school system.
- Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure.
- Knowledge of effective procedures and practices for vision, hearing and other appropriate health screening activities.
- Ability to provide effective staff development and in-service activities.
- Knowledge of current general medical and pediatric nursing practices.
- Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settings.
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
- Ability to organize, maintain and report data and information related to health services.
- Ability to use computers or other technology needed to perform job responsibilities.
- Knowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel and schools necessary for the efficient and effective processing of communications, requesting of needed information and implementation of the school nursing programs.
- Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
- Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
- Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
- Assists the administrator and school staff in developing school health programs.
- Aids in primary prevention and control of communicable diseases.
- Trains designated personnel in the administration of medications and the operation of healthcare equipment (e.g., AEDs)
- Monitors designated licensed personnel in the performance of invasive procedures.
- Participates in planning and implementing student health plans (504, IEPs, food allergy plans, etc.)
- Visits students’ homes when necessary.
- Speaks to PTA, parent or civic groups, and faculty groups as requested.
- Works with community agencies to provide improved health services.
- Participates in professional organizations and/or educational programs to earn required CEUs for licensure.
- Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures, as needed.
- Instructs teachers on screening students for health problems.
- Serves as a liaison between health professionals and the school system regarding the health needs of students.
- Recommends exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with applicable infectious and contagious diseases protocols.
- Provide effective in-service education on health-related topics for school system personnel.
- Coordinates and implements health screenings mandated by state law (spinal screening, vision, hearing, etc.)
- Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
- Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
- Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
- Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
- Uses collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
- Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
- Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
- Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must maintain emotional control under stress. The employee may become exposed to bacteria and communicable disease.
Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School’s District Salary Schedule.
