Limestone University invites applications for the position of Class 1 Officer (SC Certified Police Officer) for the department of Campus Safety.

Position Summary: This position reports directly to the Chief of Campus Safety. Duties include patrolling campus, screening visitors and other activities related to the safety and security of university property, students, employees, and community. Maintains order and prevents the unlawful use of force or violence, or any unlawful conduct on campus; enforces federal and state laws as well as county and city ordinances, and University rules and regulations. Identify potential security and safety hazards; observant while responding to potential suspicious activity on campus; maintain good public relations by assisting others as a source of information and direction; control and regulating traffic and parking; investigating all LE, security, safety, and traffic incidents on campus. *Limestone Campus Safety is a split department consisting of both security and sworn law enforcement officers.

The department operates on 12-hour shifts, providing service 24/7. Additional hours may be assigned for working special events and athletic games.

The law enforcement officer, reports to the Chief of Campus Safety, and will be responsible for carrying out the basic security functions of Limestone University; including but not limited to; the protection of life and property, maintenance of public order, prevention of crime, response to emergency situations, diffusing difficult situations, securing buildings and enforcing University rules and regulations. Assist with other University activities including but not limited to minor maintenance and/or housekeeping issues that may arise after hours. *Subject to a 90-day probation period after hire*

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Characteristic Duties

· Informs the Shift Sergeant and/or the Chief of any unusual situations or circumstances that come to their attention

· Patrols assigned areas making inquiries and inspection oriented towards protecting of life and property, preventing crime and accidents (Patrols include both foot and vehicle)

· Observes and reports any faulty or unsafe equipment and/or conditions

· Properly investigates all assigned incidents and document the findings of the investigation on department report forms

· Accurately completes all necessary administrative forms and reports

· Enforces university parking and traffic regulations by the issuance of parking and traffic citations

· Diffuses difficult situations and will accompany unauthorized individuals off college owned and controlled property

· Makes crucial decisions under stress

· Determines “probable cause” and makes arrests of individuals in compliance with department policy

· Determines when, and under what circumstances, to use non-lethal or deadly force

· May be subjected to public criticism and social pressures that create stress

· May encounter both health and safety hazards

· Testifies clearly and truthfully during campus conduct hearings and/or court proceedings

· Provides emergency first aid to injured or ill person(s) and assists in the transportation of these persons when necessary

· Maintain or obtain Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) and Conductive Electrical Weapon certification

· Admits authorized person(s) into locked buildings, facilities and rooms during business and non-business hours

· Responds to building alarms

· Responds to calls for assistance

· Assists stranded motorists by jumping dead batteries

· Provides crowd and/or traffic control during scheduled activities and/or emergency situations

· Provides security escorts upon request

· Provides basic information, direction and assistance to university personnel, students and visitors

· Occasionally remains on-duty, past the normal work shift, in the event of an emergency situation

· Occasionally works outside the normal work hours because of increased work load (completion of reports generated during shift) or the staffing of special events

· Must maintain a high standard of professionalism in representation of the university including confidentiality in all aspects of the position.

· Must work cooperatively with team members and colleagues while promoting a positive and productive environment.

· Moderate physical labor may be required on occasion and working outside in adverse weather conditions is common.

· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, to walk up and down stairs, and to walk or stand for extended periods

· Must be able to pass a physical abilities test involving running, push-ups, leg lifts, and jumping-jacks

· Assist with minor maintenance or housekeeping issues

· Any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Campus Safety

Supervisory Responsibilities:  none

Competencies: Must be a South Carolina Certified Class I Officer or retired in good standing in South Carolina and eligible for reinstatement

Qualifications:

Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age; high school diploma or equivalent certificate; Far visual acuity of at least 20/30 in each eye with or without corrective lenses; Vision capable of distinguishing basic color groups against a favorable background; A current and valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one before appointment. Proficiency utilizing a computer with Microsoft Word and Excel software; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; The ability to meet and maintain the firearms qualification standards of the Limestone University Campus Safety Department. The ability to successfully meet and maintain the physical fitness standards of Limestone University Campus Safety. As a part of the pre-employment process, the selected candidate must be willing to consent to and pass with satisfactory results, an investigative consumer report, SLED background and pre-employment drug screen and driver’s license check.

Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma/Associates Degree or Higher Preferred

Language Skills: English

Mathematical Skills: Basic add, subtract, multiply, and divide

Reasoning Ability: Should be able to think and react in stressful situations in a manner that allows problems to be solved.

Computer Skills: Must be able to learn the programs used in Public Safety Office

Travel: Minimal

Physical Demands: Must be able to stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time, lift at least 50lbs. Climb stairs and work in all weather conditions (additional when necessary)

Work Environment: Primarily outdoors winter and summer.
