Position Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate and reliable After School Counselor to support and engage K–6th grade students with special needs in a nurturing, inclusive, and structured after-school environment. The ideal candidate will have a heart for working with children, especially those who benefit from additional support, and will play a key role in promoting positive social interactions, emotional growth, and safe play.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct supervision and positive support to students during after-school hours
- Assist with transitions between activities, snack time, and outdoor/indoor play
- Help implement individualized behavior and communication strategies as needed
- Encourage participation in enrichment activities, games, and arts and crafts
- Support students in developing social and self-regulation skills
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment
- Communicate effectively with fellow staff and respond appropriately to student needs
- Follow program policies and ensure safety protocols are always observed
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children, especially those with special needs (preferred)
- Ability to remain patient, calm, and flexible in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- DCF- Staff Credentials (a plus)
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Must pass background check and meet program clearance requirements

Experience
- Previous experience working with children or adolescents in an educational or childcare setting is preferred.
- Experience in behavior management techniques is highly desirable.

- Familiarity with theater or other creative arts is a plus.
- A strong commitment to fostering a supportive environment for all students is essential.
