Job Description:
This role involves using a microscope to identify and count zooplankton and algae from pre-collected water samples, contributing to client needs for lake management data. While preference will be given to individuals with any prior microscopy or taxonomy experience or those with research experience, no prior lab experience is required—training will be provided! The position starts May 15, 2025 (or end of college semester) and runs through late summer or November 2025, with potential to become extended. You must have or be in the process of acquiring a Biology, Ecology, or Natural Resources college degree, or be a retired school teacher (especially science/biology educators) eager to apply their skills in a hands-on research setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Use a microscope to identify and count zooplankton and algae in samples
- Prepare samples and record data accurately
- Learn to use dichotomous keys (training provided)
- Maintain a clean and organized lab workspace
- Assist with other lake management business tasks
Qualifications:
- Current college student, recent graduate, or retiree (e.g., retired school teacher) with a background or interest in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or science education
- Passion for aquatic ecology, lakes, or natural resource management
- Experience with microscopes or dichotomous keys is a plus, but not required
- Ability to sit for long periods at a microscope with strong attention to detail
- Reliable, eager to learn, and able to work on-site at our Saint Cloud lab facility (full-time preferred, part-time considered)
- Local candidates from St. Cloud State University, St. John’s/St. Ben’s, St. Cloud Community College, or retired teachers from the area encouraged to apply
Schedule & Duration:
- Full-time preferred (Monday–Friday), but part-time schedules considered; starts May 15, 2025 (flexible with college schedules)
- Temporary through August or November 2025, with potential for longer-term opportunities
Compensation & Benefits:
- $15.00 – $20.00 per hour, based on experience
- Holiday pay and optional retirement matching available upon request
