Wastewater Operator III

Description

SUMMARY:  Responsible for the overall operation of the WWTP and compliance with the regulations; 

responsibility for the technical aspects of plant operations, compliance with state and federal operating regulations, and responsibility for the maintenance of the plant, pump stations, and underground sewer system. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Director of Housing and Commercial Operations, subject to review through reports and results achieved; performs all aspects of monitoring and testing done at the WWTP site.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Manage the operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment and disposal system, including sewer lift stations, and associated appurtenances, and back the water distribution system
• Closely observe and check various operational parameters and functions of the wastewater facilities, including reporting process and equipment status and adjusting, or taking other appropriate actions as necessary
• Create and maintain basic reports, record keeping, and mathematical calculations, including completing daily logs, operator sheets, and checklists, both manually and by computer, responsible for reporting to governmental agencies
• Monitor and adjust the operation of pumps, generators, cogeneration equipment, and other related equipment when necessary; record and interpret lapsed time, flow, and other metered data; monitor the systems and controls
• Perform chemical analyses on wastewater samples, including but not limited to total and fecal coliform, pH, chlorine residual, and temperatures
• Conduct preventive maintenance on wastewater treatments, including sewer lift stations and associated appurtenances; inspect wastewater collection and transmission lines for malfunctions or blockages, clear blockages and perform other corrective measures; monitor and adjusting chlorine feed rates, troubleshoot, repair, and perform routine operation and maintenance on chemical analyzers, and feed controllers for chemicals such as chlorine; participate in sewer bypass pumping as needed
• Monitor, poll, and respond to lift station alarms; acknowledge and investigate alarms throughout the wastewater and water facilities; locate and notify stand-by personnel to respond to; resolve lift station alarms and provide support, security, and communication to maintenance personnel at lift stations when responding to alarms
• Assist with the operations of the water supply, treatment, distribution, storage, and pumping systems, and reading meters.  Assist with installation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water mains, meters, service connections, and other water facilities
• Maintain the wastewater facilities in clean order, including moving, weed trimming, painting, pressure washing, and custodial duties
• Respond to customer questions and/or complaints, including questions and complaints about sewer lift overflows
• Perform other duties as required or assigned by the Director of Housing and Commercial Operations or Management

• EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; 4 years of experience; possess a Waste Water Operator III Certificate

• SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must be computer literate and able to utilize software programs; must have an understanding of basic bookkeeping skills; must be able to sort through data and understand the information; must be organized, able to manage time, priorities, and tasks; must be able to read, comprehend, and follow instructions in English; must be able to multi-task
