MAJOR DUTIES
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include department and county policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of county grounds.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Picks up litter and debris from county grounds.
- Pressure washes sidewalks and buildings.
- Mows grass and cuts weeds; edges sidewalks.
- Assists with planting flower beds and in pulling weeds; applies mulch.
- Applies pesticides.
- Trims trees, shrubs, and hedges; clears fallen trees.
- Blows leaves and yard debris.
- Prepares sports field for play.
- Installs and maintains irrigation systems.
- Replaces and repairs playground equipment.
- Assists with building demolition.
- Assists with snow removal operations.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Contacts are typically to resolve problems and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Possession of or ability to obtain North Carolina Pesticide License: Core, Ornamentals and Turf within six months of employment.
