The Tax and License Clerk receives and records County funds including property taxes and vehicle registrations. Responsibilities include computing and accepting license fees and tax payments, generating, and reviewing forms and applications, and accounting and balancing payments. This position exercises significant independent judgment while applying South Dakota and other state laws and procedures to taxpayer’s transactions.
Job Responsibilities:
- Process titles and registrations for motorized vehicles including transfers, renewals, and leases; compute and accept license fees and tax payments, issue receipts, issue handicap permits, maintain records of transactions, in person and by mail.
- Review and process applications, billings, routine reports, forms, liens, invoices, payments, and other materials according to established methods and procedures.
- Provide assistance and information to the public and other agencies through direct, telephone, and mail contact.
- Process real estate tax payments.
- Fill in and verify data on vehicle registration and license application forms, tax ledgers or receipts, enter information, compile, and tabulate data, verify accuracy of computations and entries.
- Count and balance cash, credit card, and ACH payments against cash register tapes, correct errors; prepare money deposits for next day.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED plus one year of customer service and cash handling experience. Working knowledge of modern office practices. Skill in operating a keyboard, calculator, computer, and frequently used computer programs. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two plus years of cash handling or bookkeeping experience. Experience working with legal documents and/or motor vehicle registrations. Previous related work experience in a similar environment such as a title/abstract real estate company.
