Position Details:
- Full-time (40 hours)
- Monday - Friday (9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.)
Education Required:
- High School diploma or GED required.
Education Preferred:
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program preferred
License, Certification and/or Registration:
- Phlebotomy certification preferred
Experience:
- Previous work experience strongly preferred.
Additional Skills/Abilities:
- Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly.
- Must be able to maintain absolute confidentiality in the handling of patient information.
- Absolute integrity and accuracy in the patient identification process.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Verifies correct patient identification utilizing two patient identifiers.
- Notifies nurse in case of missing or incorrect patient armband.

- Performs phlebotomy and obtains acceptable samples for analysis on hospital patients for neonates (1-30 days), infants (30 days – 1 year), children (1 – 17 years), adults (18 - 65 years) and geriatrics (65 years and older).
- Demonstrates ability to collect adequate number of venipunctures during a shift.
- Meets the established STAT and NOW, recollect and timed specimen turnaround times and returns all samples to the lab.
- Performs collections with special procedures, i.e. GTT’s, blood cultures and blood bank collections and swab collections.
- Also collects trough, peak levels according to protocol.
- Labels samples at the patient’s bedside.
- Documents canceled/redraw specimens to include RN first initial and last name as well as reason for cancellation/redraw.
- Takes the initiative to report all problems or incidents to Manager.
- Maintains a work environment that is safe for patients and fellow employees.
- Strictly adheres to all safety policies and procedures.
- Participates in achieving budgetary goals of the laboratory by using supplies in a cost-effective manner and ensuring no overtime without supervisor approval of overtime.
- Assists in ensuring that supplies are adequately stocked by notifying appropriate person when supply levels are low.
- Assists technical staff with limited pre-analytical and limited waived testing duties under supervision of technical staff.
- Assists in Central Processing area as needed or as assigned.
- Duties may include processing samples, utilizing computer to status samples, verifying accurate identification of samples, prioritizing stats, aliquoting and initialing samples, delivering samples to testing areas, completing pending logs, and archiving and retrieving samples.
