What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance, Sustainability Internship - Outdoor Learning position at Lincoln Public Schools?
The Lincoln Public Schools Sustainability Department is looking for a passionate individual to join our team. LPS Sustainability coordinates district-wide environmental programs and provides support for green school activities.This internship will be specifically focused on supporting school gardens and outdoor learning.
Garden-related tasks:
- Develop and update educational resources for staff and volunteers who engage with outdoor learning
- Support the planning of quarterly Garden Gatherings and other professional development and training opportunities
- Assist schools with basic horticultural maintenance and improvements of outdoor classrooms and school gardens
- Engage in hands-on learning experiences at schools including garden clean up events, planting days, garden clubs, outreach events, etc.
- Support the development of outdoor teaching and learning materials
- Create garden maintenance goals, objectives, initiatives, and strategies in collaboration with related LPS and community partners
- Maintain a school garden and outdoor classroom database and inventory
- Support gardens and outdoor learning related communications (newsletters, presentation materials, Slack workspace, etc.)

Requirements:
- Basic gardening knowledge and skills
- Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and Google Drive
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Detail-oriented with ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines
- Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license
Prefer applicants currently pursuing a degree in a related field including, but not limited to: environmental studies, environmental education, environmental science, horticulture, landscape design and management, fisheries and wildlife, etc. Experience with outdoor education and ArcGIS is also preferred but not required.
This is a paid position, starting at $15.63/hour.
Candidates should have availability for 15-20 hours/week between the hours of 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Internship will begin in May 2025. The end date will be flexible depending on the candidate.
