Position Overview: The position of Dean of Students serves as an assistant to the principal of the assigned school. This position assists the principal in the day-to-day affairs of the school. The primary duties and responsibilities focus on a variety of student management responsibilities specifically assigned to assist in the overall supervision of students. Other administrative needs and processes may also be assigned.
Essential Job Functions:
- Directly supervises students as delegated.
- Manage student supervision issues and enforce school behavioral expectations.
- Maintain a program of effective student discipline which promotes consistency among the staff and provides support for the staff expectations.
- Communicate the expectations and limits of school behavior to students, staff, and parents
- Assist in the planning, developing and implementing of individual student behavior plans.
- Confer appropriate consequences for behavior including detention, in school suspension, and out of school suspension
- Assist in developing programs to promote positive student behavior as well as intervention strategies.
- Assist staff and parents in developing student behavior.
- Organize and maintain a system for student attendance procedures working directly with the school attendance secretary on a daily basis to monitor attendance, tardy, truancies, and early dismissals.
- Works as the Test Coordinator.
- Other duties as assigned
Other Job Functions:
- Maintains a high degree of visibility throughout the school day.
- Assists in the overall communication efforts to staff, students, parents, and patrons as requested.
- Assists with the management of student scheduling
- Assists in the development and implementation of appropriate drug and alcohol intervention and interdiction strategies
- Serves on committees and fulfills such other assignments as directed by the principal.
- Assists with school security issues as needed such as school dances, games, extra-curricular activities.
- Set and carry out goals each year.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Current laws, rules, policies, methods and procedures related to school management.
- Educational curriculum concepts and instructional techniques.
- Learning theory and human psychology
- Management team concepts.
- Effective communication techniques including problem solving and conflict resolution
Ability to:
- Provide direction to others and make independent judgments.
- Work with parents and students on chronic attendance issues.
- Assume responsibility of principal in his/her absence.
- Serve as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues.
- Maintain regular attendance
- Maintain confidentiality
Experience:
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching or related experience with increasing levels of responsibilities in school. Prefer working towards current Oregon Administrator's License
License:
- Current Oregon license with appropriate endorsement in area of assignment
- Current ODL
