What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Bands position at Lincoln University of Missouri?
Purpose:
The Lincoln University Director of Bands provides effective leadership organizational development and management, artistic and creative direction for holistic band program that includes the official university band (Marching Musical Storm), Symphonic Band, Pep Band, and Jazz Ensemble. The Director of Bands may also teach classes as part of the institution's general education program and must meet academic requirements to serve as an adjunct instructor.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Build a band program that embraces the historical aspects HBCU bands.
- Ability to conduct and create special presentations for homecoming, spring fest, and university events.
- Plan and hold an annual band concert for the University and participate in community events both locally and statewide.
- Teach general music education classes at the request of the university.
- Create a band environment that supports the academic mission of the institution by creating a culture of excellence in the program.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- The scope of the position frequently requires attendance at evening and/or weekend activities, meetings, seminars, and workshops.
- Serve on committees as assigned.
- Supervising the casual employees who assists with band operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A minimum of five years' experience as a Director of Bands or Assistant Band Director, preferably at a HBCU.
- Demonstrated leadership in initiating and implementing change.
- Leadership development, programming, and organizational skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- A strong public service orientation to work well with faculty, staff and students.
- Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Strong computer skills.
- Budgetary skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse team in a fast-paced environment.
- Enthusiasm and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change.
Education and Experience:
- Master's degree in music or music education is required.
- Must have experience as a Band Director or Assistant Band Director, preferably at an HBCU.
- Must be proficient in English.
- Must be sensitive toward all nationalities and beliefs.
- Should have some experience in performance and writing cadence's etc.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods.
- Occasionally ability to lift, carry, and put away parcels weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Normal physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job taking distance and speed into account.
- Normal physical agility, which includes ability to maneuver body while in place.
- Normal physical strength to handle routine office materials and tools.
- Normal dexterity of hands and fingers, normal endurance.
- Normal coordination, including eye-hand, hand-foot.
Working Conditions and Environment:
- The work environment involves everyday risks or discomfort which requires normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings and training rooms.
- Overtime work may be required on occasions, dependent on workload and work objectives.
- Travel on occasion may be required as it relates to position's responsibilities.
