What are the responsibilities and job description for the Greenhouse Manager position at Lincoln University of Missouri?
Purpose:
Performs daily operation and management of research greenhouses, growth chambers and high tunnels for plant-based research and specialty plant research. Provides technical support and resources to researchers for greenhouse, growth chamber and high tunnel research needs (e.g., experiment setup, plant care, Insect and disease control, irrigation, pesticide, and fertilizer use, etc.).
Essential Job Functions:
- Maintains equipment, environmental control, inventory, and supplies for the greenhouses, growth chambers, and high tunnels.
- Participate in workshops and outreach activities relevant to the operation of the greenhouses, growth chambers, and high tunnels.
- Establishes standard protocols and policies for the utilization, maintenance and management of greenhouses, growth chambers, and high tunnels.
- Responsible for the review of space request forms submitted by university faculty and staff. Based on the reviews and evaluations, the Greenhouse Manager shall forward recommendations for allocation of space, equipment and resources in the University greenhouses and high tunnels located at the Dickenson Research Center and the University Farms to the Farm Superintendent.
- Ensures compliance with health, safety and legal requirements in the greenhouses, growth chambers, and high tunnels.
- Supervises/trains undergraduate students and greenhouse employees.
- Works with Lincoln University's research farm employees, facility managers, extension educators, producers, and Industry partners as needed.
- Responsible for all acquisitions of materials and supplies required for greenhouse and high tunnel operations.
- Ensure cleanliness of the university greenhouses and high tunnels is maintained.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- Writing and communication skills.
- Computer, research, and analytical skills.
- Willingness and ability to work in a team-oriented environment with a diverse group of faculty and students.
- Driver's license.
- Ability to operate power and hand tools.
- Ability to operate a truck/trailer and a walk-behind tractor and implements.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- Bachelor's degree in plant science, biology, agronomy, or closely related field from an accredited institution required.
- Two years' experience managing/operating the greenhouses, growth chambers and high tunnels required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Light sedentary office work.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Prolonged periods of standing at a table and working with plants.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
