JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing nursing care to students in assigned schools.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Triages students; provides a nursing assessment in the school setting to ensure appropriate and safe care; document student encounters.
• Reviews and administers medications as ordered by health care providers, including daily medications as well as emergency medications, such as Epi-Pens; administers medications using injections, feeding pumps, insulin pumps, etc. as needed.
• Trains staff to administer medications and respond to medical emergencies as appropriate; educates staff on the procedures for administering medication in a school setting.
• Collaborates with parents/guardians and health care providers to develop individualized health care plans specific to student’s needs.
• Participates in emergency preparedness and response activities; reports for special assignments during public health emergencies and disaster situations.
• Reviews student health data sheets to identify students with specific health care needs.
• Develops care plans for students as appropriate for diagnosed health conditions in coordination with other members of the student’s health care team.
• Reviews immunization and health assessments of students to ensure compliance with state laws.
• Provides vision, dental, and physical/wellness screenings for students as indicated.
• Responds to medical emergencies in school setting and utilizes emergency services if needed.
• Refers students in need of medical attention to proper provider.
• Provides health education to students.
• Performs monthly audit of medication administration records, AED/AED supplies, and school-based Epi-Pen expirations; prepares related monthly and annual reports.
• Collaborates with teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, and parents to develop IEP or 504 plans based on specific student needs.
• Develops care plans for students as appropriate for diagnosed health conditions in coordination with other members of the student’s health care team.
• Ensures program operation in compliance with state laws.
• Assists Senior Health Nurse in the management of programs, staff, and budgets as assigned.
• Collaborates with school administration and local health officials to develop a plan for communicable disease outbreaks in the community.
• Participates in emergency preparedness and response activities; reports for special assignments during public health emergencies and disaster situations.
• May be designated as an Elementary School, Middle School or High School team lead to coordinate, disseminate information and assist in onboarding new hires.
• Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Senior School Health Nurse assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include NC public health laws, Board of Nursing guidelines, the School Health Policy and Procedure Manual, the Lincoln County Schools Policy and Procedure Manual, contract requirements, treatment guidelines, pharmacy laws, and other program, department, county, state, and federal guidelines. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.  

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of varied nursing and administrative duties. The need to collaborate patient care with a variety of other parties contributes to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to provide nursing care to assigned schools. Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective delivery of health services to students.

• Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county personnel, school administrators, teachers, social workers, parents, students, physicians, other health care providers, and the general public.
• Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office, student homes, or in public schools. The employee is exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Special Qualifications:
• School Nurses who do not possess a BSN degree must be committed to obtaining this degree and successfully completing the National Certified School Nurse Exam within three years of employment.
• Must be eligible to take the Nationally Certified School Nurse Exam if employed by the School Nurse Funding Initiative. 
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Possession of state licensure as a Registered Nurse.
