Description

The Custodial Supervisor oversees the daily cleaning of the Library. This role supports the Director of Facilities by ensuring that the facilities are maintained at the prescribed level of cleanliness, safety, and sanitation. 


The Custodial Supervisor supervises and coordinates the custodial team, ensuring all tasks are performed efficiently and effectively. Additionally, the Custodial Supervisor supports training on the proper use of equipment and materials and ensures adherence to operations processes and procedures.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Supervision and Coordination:

  • Supervise and coordinate the work of custodial staff, ensuring all tasks are completed to a high standard.
  • Set clear performance expectations for team members, conduct regular check-ins, guide goal setting, provide timely constructive feedback, and complete performance reviews.
  • Perform routine inspections of facilities to ensure cleanliness and maintenance standards are met.
  • Provide training as needed on proper cleaning techniques and equipment usage.
  • Complete daily work orders, delegate daily duties, and ensure successful execution and closure of tasks.
  • Maintain records of cleaning schedules and tasks completed by custodial staff.
  • Address any custodial-related issues or concerns raised by staff, visitors or patrons promptly.

2. Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • Perform daily cleaning procedures in accordance with specified standards.
  • Vacuum, clean carpets, sweep, mop, strip, wax, polish, and buff floors. Dust woodwork and polish brass. Clean glass as needed. Address spills and other custodial tasks as required.
  • Maintain stock levels of custodial and safety supplies, ensuring timely reordering and distribution.
  • Stay current with skills and knowledge in proper and safe techniques of custodial and construction maintenance.
  • Complete assigned operations duties, including special or seasonal projects such as wall washing, window washing, carpet cleaning, hard surface floor care.
  • Fill in as needed to cover staff on paid time off.

3. Safety:

  • Assist with emergency clean-up and other requests.
  • Ensure all custodial staff are trained on proper use of equipment and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA guidelines and other relevant safety regulations.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety standards and implement necessary changes.

4. Event Operations

  • Assist Facilities department with event set-up, teardown, and working events for both internal and external events. 

5. General Support:

  • Complete all other duties as assigned or requested for the general support of the facility.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • 3-5 years of consistent work experience in custodial or related fields.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a supervisory role within custodial or housekeeping.
  • Flexibility with work schedule to support weekend scheduling and/or evening activities.
  • Availability to adjust work schedule to accommodate events as needed, including periodic weekend work.
  • Basic computer knowledge, including the use of the internet and the ability to learn Microsoft Outlook and Teams programs.
  • Basic math skills. 
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, safety regulations, and training experience.
  • Proficiency in office technology and software (Microsoft Office suite).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive matters.

Preferred:

  • Valid driver’s license, and good driving record.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and items up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation of floor machines and custodial tools, materials (cleaning supplies), and methods used in building custodial work.

  • Adaptability: Exhibits the capacity to modify and adjust work methods in response to evolving circumstances or shifting demands. Remains open-minded, embraces change, and proactively seeks innovative solutions to new challenges.  
  • Safe Practices: Demonstrates commitment and adherence to safety protocols. Maintains a clean and secure work environment. Is vigilant when undertaking hazardous or potentially risky tasks. 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS   

This position does not typically require travel outside the library. 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

The position involves hearing, feeling attributes of objects, grasping, pushing, standing, walking, reaching with hands/arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, lifting moderate weight (up to 50 pounds). 


WORK CONDITIONS 

Work will primarily occur within a typical office and library setting. Outside work may be required from time to time. Remote work is not offered for this position.
