Job description
Description: Our Surgical / OR Tech assists the surgeon by providing and controlling the sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment required during surgical intervention; has knowledge of required instrument systems which are required for surgical procedures including power systems, implants and ancillary supplies; and assures that instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized, and available when needed.
- Must have completed high school or equivalent.
- Must meet one of the following requirements:
- successfully completed a nationally or regionally accredited educational program for surgical technologists; or
- hold and maintain a certified surgical technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor, or other nationally recognized credentialing organization; or
- completed a military-based or United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps surgical technologist training program; or
- be employed as a surgical technologist in a health care facility as of December 20, 2011; or
- be in the service of the federal government, to the extent that individual is performing surgical technology duties related to that service
- Current certification in basic CPR
- Good command of the English language
- Computer literate
- Ability to work well with physicians, employees, patients, and others
- Superior dexterity skills needed to pass instruments
- Must complete continuing education annually to maintain certification
Requirements:
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Requires extensive mobility (walking and standing) while performing duties
- Periodic pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients and/or equipment
- May have exposure to patients with communicable diseases
- May have exposure to hazardous equipment or agents
RESPONSIBILITIES include:
Helps Nurse open sterile supplies and prepares for each operative procedure.
Assists surgeons during procedures according to prescribed standards. Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
Sets up table, instruments and supplies according to the type of operation.
Maintains correct count of sponges/needles as directed.
Maintains aseptic technique at all times as dictated by accepted standards.
Assists in the maintenance and care of specimens as directed.
Assists in the application of dressings, casts, and in moving patients as directed.
Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies as directed in procedure.
Compiles and makes available all necessary supplies needed for procedures. Prepares surgical trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies as directed in procedures.
Helps clean and maintain rooms, equipment, and furniture according to prescribed procedures.
Assists in inventory storage, expiration date monitoring, and retrieval of supplies and equipment.
Assists with emergency procedures as directed.
Maintains confidentiality of all patient and Center's communications/documents.
Communicates a positive and caring attitude toward patient, peers, staff and all other contacts.
Seeks guidance, direction and assistance when needed. Follows Center Policy and Procedures at all times.
Other duties in LSC to include:
Assists with inventory of OR/Sterile Processing/Doctor's Changing Room Supplies-> Restocks as necessary.
Participate with OR turn-over. Housekeeping duties such as cleaning, mopping, moving of OR beds and equipment, as needed.
Participate with instrument washing from OR surgical cases after review of
information for use (IFU) specifics.
Participate with daily filing, receiving of deliveries and restocking of delivered
supplies.
Any, and all other tasks, as requested by the Administrator/Director of Nursing and Manager.
