Summary
An Electrical Apprentice 4 in industrial mining is an advanced-level apprentice responsible for assisting journeyman and master electricians in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in mining operations. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, troubleshooting skills, and adherence to strict safety standards in hazardous mining environments.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment, including motors, generators, conveyors, crushers, and control panels.
- Work with high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems in underground and surface mining operations.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues using testing equipment such as multimeters, megohmmeters, and oscilloscopes.
- Install and maintain electrical wiring, transformers, circuit breakers, and lighting systems.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
- Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures to ensure equipment safety.
- Assist in maintaining and repairing programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and automated control systems.
- Follow strict safety protocols, including MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations, OSHA standards, and company policies.
- Work in confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and hazardous conditions with proper protective equipment.
- Assist in training and mentoring lower-level apprentices on electrical tasks and safety procedures.
- Maintain tools, materials, and equipment in an organized manner.
- Document work activities and report to supervisors and site managers.
Requirements
- 3–4 years of hands-on electrical experience, preferably in an industrial or mining environment.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and MSHA regulations.
- Familiarity with mining electrical systems, including power distribution, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and automation controls.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and technical manuals.
- Experience with electrical testing equipment and troubleshooting techniques.
- Strong understanding of electrical hazards and safety procedures.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment, work at heights, and operate in confined spaces.
- Willingness to work in remote locations and extended shifts as required.
- OSHA 10/30 and MSHA safety certification (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Work Environment
- Underground mines, surface mines, and processing plants.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as helmets, gloves, respirators, and safety harnesses.
