About Light Equipment Operator:
Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks. Work is performed under supervision. Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis.
Essential Functions
- Drives a dump truck (up to 60,000 lbs.) to transport sand, rock, dirt, and supplies.
- Acts as flagger during road construction work.
- Operates equipment associated with snow removal operations.
- Operates constructions equipment including but not limited to skid loaders, rollers, tractors, mower and end loaders with buckets, forks or various attachments.
- Operates tractor and mower for mowing along roads and ditches and cuts trees and brush.
- Performs concrete, asphalt, and seal coat patching and replacement.
- Loads and unloads equipment from trailers.
- Services and performs minor repairs to equipment.
- Replaces and repairs road signage.
- Utilizes tablets, computers, and other technology to update GIS system, complete payroll, complete Iowa one call tickets, and other tasks.
- Operates a truck equipped with water storage tank and pump to flush storm drainage structures and various other tasks.
- Performs all other duties as assigned to help drive a high level of customer satisfaction, fulfill the County’s Mission and Strategic Direction, and abide by the Linn County Core Values.
- Performs a variety of physical tasks associated with road construction, maintenance and repair including bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, twisting, crawling, reaching, and sitting. Stand and walk frequently, sometimes on uneven and unstable surfaces such as at construction sites, roadway, or ditch embankments. Work may be performed under adverse weather conditions and terrains.
- Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer” and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- A minimum of one (1) year of equipment operation experience in the construction and/or maintenance of roads, driveways, or parking lots using current day practices required. Experience must include operation of dump trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 35,000 lbs. or greater.
- One (1) year experience plowing snow using a truck with adjustable plow required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations and accident prevention practices.
- Ability to learn standard practices, methods and materials used in road construction and maintenance activities.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Skill in the operation of equipment under all types of weather conditions.
- Knowledge of excavation safety requirements and Iowa “one call” requirements.
Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid state of Iowa Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake, manual transmission or tractor-trailer restrictions and a tank endorsement. Or possession of Class A CDL and the ability to pass air brake, manual transmission, tractor-trailer restrictions and a tank endorsement within ninety (90) days of transfer or hire into the position. May be required to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License. Required to demonstrate skill in the operation of light equipment to the satisfaction of the Operations Superintendent and County Engineer during the probation and trial period, whichever is applicable. Must pass a DOT physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment, with random testing as determined by the County. Regular work attendance required. Must remain awake and aware of surroundings at all times.
