About the Role:
Lionardo Art Camps are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Art Camp Leader to join our team for the summer! This position offers the unique opportunity to lead young campers (ages 3-14) through exciting and engaging art projects that inspire creativity and individual expression.
The Art Camp Leader will follow a pre-established schedule and planned art activities. However, they should be prepared to adapt the projects based on the group’s abilities, interests, and available time. Flexibility and creativity are key to ensuring that every camper has a meaningful experience.
As the primary supervisor, the Art Camp Leader will be responsible for overseeing the camp activities and ensuring the safety and well-being of all campers. This role includes providing guidance and direction to the Art Camp Assistant and managing the group of 12-16 children daily, ensuring a smooth flow of activities and maintaining an engaging environment.
This is a team-based position, where you will work closely with an Art Camp Assistant to guide children through each activity. You will also be responsible for maintaining a welcoming and organized art space, upholding the camp's mission to foster creativity, and supporting the personal growth of every camper.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead daily art projects and activities for children ages 3-12, following established camp guidelines.
- Supervise campers during art activities and other camp events, ensuring their safety, well-being, and personal growth.
- Collaborate with the Art Camp Assistant to set up and clean up materials, maintain a tidy workspace, and manage supplies.
- Provide clear, step-by-step guidance to campers throughout their art projects.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians about their child's progress and camp activities.
- Enforce safety rules and ensure the art space is organized and ready each day.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm and creativity to inspire campers and foster their artistic exploration.
- Encourage individuality and self-expression, embracing the camp’s child-led, process-based philosophy.
- Assist in maintaining a positive, inclusive, and creative atmosphere throughout the camp.
Skills and Qualifications:
- A passion for working with children and nurturing creativity in a fun and safe environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and manage groups of children.
- Patience, problem-solving abilities, and a creative mindset to handle various situations.
- Knowledge of diverse art materials and techniques (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture).
- Physical ability to carry heavy loads and perform various tasks as required by the camp.
- Physical ability to stand for three hour camp shifts without breaks.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively throughout the camp day.
Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 25 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 2 years of experience working with children in an educational, camp, or youth program setting.
- Familiarity with art techniques and materials.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain before the first day of employment).
Additional Information:
- Non-paid lunch break will be provided during applicable shifts.
- Must be able to reliably commute or relocate to Grand Rapids, MI 49504 before the start of the position.
- This position requires the ability to supervise children visually and audibly in a variety of settings.
- Training and preparation are required. Pay during training will be $16/hour, with starting pay at $25/hour in the leadership role.
Hours: This is a part-time position with varying hours, morning or afternoon Monday-Friday. It will be for 5-6 weeks of the summer and 20-25 hours per week.
