Job Description
To function at a professional nursing level using both leadership and clinical expertise in order to assure comprehensive care and treatment is rendered to residents. Maintains 24 hour responsibility for the continuity of nursing care and the management of the resident’s welfare. Must have the willingness to adjust own schedule in anticipation of the best interest of the residents.
This is a temporary position working the daytime shift, 8:00am - 4:30pm. Job assignment to last anywhere from 3-6 months.
The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, a current and unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse who is certified in CPR/AED/First Aid. Experience preferred working in a long-term care setting. Candidates must have a genuine desire to help others, strong organizational and multitasking skills.
The Unit Manager will display patience and tact with good judgment, when dealing with residents and their family members, & visitors. The candidate will work under close supervision of the Director of Nursing.
Responsibilities
- Serves as a role model at all times, in all aspects of resident care
- Ensures that all safety and infection control practices are followed
- Responds to emergency situations
- Upon arrival to unit, ensures appropriate staff have reported to floor. Assumes responsibility for assuring accuracy of daily staffing assignment.
- Performs walking rounds and reviews 24-hour report daily. Assures accurate resident census on each shift report.
- Puts customer service first. Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of care in a caring compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individual's needs and rights.
- Is knowledgeable and familiar with all residents, their behaviors and pertinent family members. Is available for resident/family questions and concerns.
- Provides guidance and/or instruction to residents and their families when the opportunity arises.
- Attends and participates in resident care conferences. Monitors effectiveness of individual care plans and makes changes as needed with the interdisciplinary team. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team in the design, implementation and evaluation of various programs within the unit.
- Encourages nursing staff to perform their jobs to the fullest of their potential. Gives clinical and professional guidance to both professional and non-professional unit staff.
- Is knowledgeable in the use of all equipment including: IV, tube feeding, wound vac, oxygen, low air loss mattress, bladder scanner, mechanical lifts, special bath-tubs, and hoyer lifts. Clinically experienced with procedures such as re-insertion of g-tubes, insertion of Foley catheters, IV starts, wound dressing changes, AED, nebulizer
- Assumes responsibility for the overall unit function in order to optimize care to clients and to ensure efficient staff function and compliance with state regulations for the designated staff.
- Reports in a timely manner any significant changes in a resident's condition, personnel problems, and incidents to the Director of Nursing.
- Maintains/delegates cleanliness of medication and treatment rooms, oxygen supply room, community bathrooms and shower rooms.
- Makes sure recaps are completed before the 30th/31st of each month, signed and in charts by the 10th of each month.
- Monthly reports to the DON/ADON including but not limited to: wound tracking, acuity tracking, infection control report, pharmacy consult sheets completed, psych notes done on appropriate residents, and incident/accident reports
- Handles incident reports making sure all proper documents are completed including statements.
- Makes rounds to be sure all empty rooms are cleaned.
- Completes monthly behavior notes and monitors psychotropic med use
- Monitors all weights, evaluates results and communicates with physician and dietician
- Monitors prompt answering of call bells by staff
- Completes/participates in staff evaluations
- Provides individual counseling to staff when necessary, documents sessions, and communicates to Director of Nursing
Conducts periodic staff meetings with each shift to disseminate information. Must be able to handle stress in crisis situations
Qualifications
- Diploma in Nursing at a minimum; Bachelor's degree preferred
- Current NJ RN License
- Two years of relevant experience required
- Current CPR, First Aid, & AED certifications.
- Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to maintain composure under stress
- Strong organizational & time management skills and able to multitask.
- Proficient computer skills
- Able to work a flexible schedule, which may include working days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
