Faculty, Associate Professor of Archaeology - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Lipscomb University
Nashville, TN Full Time
POSTED ON 1/7/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/6/2025

Lipscomb University’s Lanier Center for Archaeology and the Department of Archaeology invite applications for a tenure-track position in Archaeology of the New Testament World, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (dependent on qualifications of successful candidate). A qualified established scholar may be hired at the rank of Professor. Lipscomb University is a faith-based community and successful candidates must be able to strongly affirm the Centering Core of Lipscomb University and be committed to Christian Higher Education.

Preference will be given to candidates familiar with the New Testament era whose primary focus is the archaeology of the Roman period in the southern Levant, but candidates will also be considered with expertise in Hellenistic, Roman, or Late Antique archaeology of the eastern Mediterranean. A terminal degree in Archaeology or an ancillary field (with the appropriate focus) is required. Engagement with scholarship in one or more additional fields in the humanities and/or social sciences is also preferred, especially Ancient History. The capacity to teach at  both the undergraduate and graduate level post-Iron Age Archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean programs is a requisite of this position, as is an active program in field, laboratory, or museum research in the Archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean. The person appointed should demonstrate a commitment to teaching, and strong potential for effectiveness as an instructor and mentor. Experience at a staff-level position on a research excavation or survey is required. We seek exceptional junior scholars who augment or complement the present strengths and diversity of our community at Lipscomb University, and who enhance our commitment to inclusive education and research. Qualified applicants must have held a Ph.D. or terminal degree by the time of their appointment (August 1, 2025).

Applications are welcome from candidates who have demonstrated a capacity for innovative research and cross-disciplinary thinking in the archaeology of the New Testament World. Candidates must have an outstanding record of scholarly achievement, as well as a proven record of publication and service commensurate with their career stage. Excellence in, and commitment to, undergraduate and graduate teaching are essential. We particularly value active involvement and leading roles in ongoing fieldwork projects.
