Title: Program Assistant
Standard Hours: up to 10 hours per week
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Summary: This temporary grant-funded position will support other LVOY employees and help the program empower learners to extend their basic literacy in order to be successful in their work/school/life endeavors.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, this position is responsible for:
- Attending and supporting tutors and learners at the weekly English Language Learner (ELL aka ESL) class held in Penn Yan (held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 5:30-7:30 pm). This person will help complete intake packets, conduct all case management and help with learner assessments if needed. They will also report attendance and important happenings to the Yates County Program Coordinator.
- Identifying knowledge gaps that learners have in the areas of digital, health, & financial literacy, workforce readiness, and immigration assistance. This will be done through the careful review of learner intake documents and communication with tutors.
- Once topics are identified, research appropriate curriculum and present or coordinate classes on chosen topics. Also provided class materials to tutors who wish to present the information to learners one-on-one. Maintain and report class attendance and outcomes.
- Topics may include: basic computer skills (creating an email account and writing an email); how to navigate the health care system or enroll in health insurance; financial counseling and online banking skills; interviewing skills and certification in office programs (i.e. MS Word); and immigrant, worker and renter rights.
- Must attend required training to be eligible to perform case management. Must attend required training if performing learner assessments.
Required Qualifications: Experience or interest in working with community agencies, education and/or human services. Sensitivity to adults with special needs and/or bilingual individuals. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Good organizational skills; ability to handle confidential information. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of the Literacy Volunteers’ mission and office. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
