We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our team at our global center for technology and innovation, located in the heart of Silicon Valley.

We are seeking an Instrumentation Chemist that specializes in the use of advanced laboratory instrumentation to analyze the chemical composition of inorganic and geological materials. The role involves working with a variety of instruments to digest and characterize substances such as minerals, metals, soils, and water, including working in a wet chemistry laboratory with common mineral acids and other inorganic reagents. The chemist ensures precise analysis to support research in environmental science, agriculture, materials science, and related fields.

If you are passionate about using your chemical expertise to contribute to groundbreaking environmental technologies, we encourage you to apply. Please submit your resume along with a cover letter detailing your qualifications and your motivation for joining the Lithos Carbon team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instrument Operation & Maintenance: Operate, calibrate, and maintain instruments, including those suited for inorganic and geochemical analysis, such as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and ICP mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), acidometric titration and liquid chromatography (LC)
  • Inorganic & Geochemical Analysis: Analyze inorganic compounds and geological materials (e.g., minerals, metals, soils, and groundwater) to determine their chemical & mineralogical composition and physical properties. Conduct tests for trace elements and contaminants
  • Sample Preparation, Data Collection & Interpretation: Perform sample prep, digestion and collect data using lab instrumentation. Apply knowledge of inorganic chemistry and geochemistry to interpret results. Provide insights related to environmental impact, resource quality, or material properties
  • Method Development for Geochemical Testing: Develop and refine analytical methods tailored to geochemistry, including sample preparation & kinetic characterization techniques for rocks, minerals, and other natural materials
  • Collaboration in Geochemical Research: Work closely with geochemists, environmental scientists, and engineers to provide analytical support in research projects related to natural resources, soil health, and water quality. Collaborate with the research team to support ongoing projects and innovations in carbon dioxide removal technology
  • Quality Control & Assurance in Inorganic/Geochemical Testing: Ensure the accuracy and precision of geochemical and inorganic analyses by calibrating instruments and adhering to quality control standards

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or Master's) in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, or a related field from an accredited institution is preferred. Equivalent work experience will also be considered
  • Strong practical experience with analytical instrumentation in a wet chemistry laboratory setting is essential
  • Prior knowledge or experience in soil science and/or agronomy is desirable
  • Proven ability to develop and standardize new methods for equipment and process validation
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting advanced analytical instruments
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in both data analysis and documentation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address issues with instrumentation and methods
  • Ability to clearly communicate findings, procedures, and technical information to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of geochemical processes, trace element analysis, and how different chemical compounds behave in natural environments
  • Ability to identify and diagnose problems with instrumentation when they occur; perform minor repairs or coordinate with specialized technicians for more complex repairs
  • Ensure accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting, utilizing various platforms for effective data management, storage & transfer
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations, such as those related to soil and water testing, is advantageous
