Job Title: Lead Transportation Mechanic

Reports to: Shop Supervisor

Pay Scale: TD 5

Calendar:  240 Days

Primary Purpose: Leads district’s transportation mechanics in the maintenance and repair of the district's fleet of school buses, vehicles, and related equipment to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of transportation services. To serve as a working lead mechanic, providing technical expertise, guidance, and mentorship. To diagnose mechanical issues, perform preventative maintenance, and adhere to all safety and compliance standards. 

  Qualifications: 

  Education/Certification:

• High School Diploma or equivalent 
• Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements or ability to obtain upon hire
• Completion of a technical or vocational program in automotive or diesel technology preferred
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in medium/heavy trucks, diesel mechanics, brakes, and other relevant areas preferred
• Successful completion of state mandated school bus driver training and certification program or ability to obtain upon hire 

Experience:

• Minimum of five years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair (school bus or fleet experience preferred)
• Minimum of two years experience in leadership or supervisory role preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Advanced knowledge of diesel, propane, and gasoline engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, and air systems.
• Knowledge of after treatment systems including EGR Valves, EGR Coolers, SCR, DPF, DOC, and Injector Diagnostics
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Ability to pass a Texas Department of Transportation Medical Examination
• Ability to pass a dexterity exam
• Ability to access and use printed service materials
• Ability to communicate effectively with others

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Maintenance and Repairs

1. Perform and/or lead major and minor mechanical repairs, scheduled maintenance, and diagnostics on school buses, fleet vehicles, and equipment to ensure proper functioning and longevity.  
2. Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, electrical, and cooling systems.
3. Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed.
4. Estimate time and materials required for major repairs, assign work to mechanic(s), and inspect completed work for quality.
5. Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform on-site repairs or towing as necessary.
6. Test drive vehicles post-repair to verify proper operation and performance

Safety

1. Ensures mechanic(s) follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Oversees the use of all tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
2. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the Shop Supervisor.
3. Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition and perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment according to established schedules.
4. Assist in leading the mechanic team in following district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Other

1.  Maintain accurate and detailed records of maintenance, inspections, and materials required to perform repairs and service.
2. Assist the Shop Supervisor in coordinating daily activities and assigning tasks to mechanics. 
3. Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to mechanic(s) to enhance team productivity and skill development.
4. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
5. Drive a school bus route as required by the Transportation  Services Department
6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Transportation Mechanic. Other supervisory responsibilities as assigned by Shop Supervisor/Director for Transportation Services.

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.

Posture: Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

Motion: Moderate walking, climbing; frequent grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; moderate driving

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; work on site required
