Job Title: Shop Supervisor
Reports to: Director for Transportation Services
Dept.: Transportation Services
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Scale: TD 6
Calendar: 240 Days
Primary Purpose: Responsible for on-site leadership of vehicle repair and maintenance. Perform major mechanical repairs with no supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of all district vehicles. Manage all aspects of the fleet repair shop; including but not limited to: personnel, procurement, scheduling, maintenance of both yellow and white fleet vehicles. Serve as a key liaison between the transportation services department and external vendors to support fleet operations.
Qualifications: Education/Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsement
- Certified Texas vehicle safety inspector
- Completion of a technical or vocational program in automotive or diesel technology preferred
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in medium/heavy trucks preferred
- Successful completion of state mandated school bus driver training and certification program or ability to obtain upon hire
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair (school bus or fleet experience preferred)
- Minimum of two years experience in leadership or supervisory role preferred
- Experience with fleet management software and diagnostic tools preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance
- Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
- Ability to access, read, and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance inspection rules, procedure manuals, and vehicle service manuals
- Ability to direct and supervise personnel
- Ability to pass Texas Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
- Ability to access and use service materials
- Ability to operate bus
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair
- Process and prioritize vehicle repair work orders. Evaluate and recommend all repairs and calculate cost estimates. Arrange for outside repairs when work cannot be performed in the shop
- Supervise and coordinate work of transportation mechanic(s). Oversee completion of work and inspect completed work for quality.
- Develop and enforce a preventive maintenance and care schedules to ensure vehicle safety and efficiency
- Consult with other mechanics to help resolve repair problems and help train mechanics and mechanic assistants.
- Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up–to-date preventative maintenance records.
- Generate reports on fleet condition, maintenance schedules, and repair costs to support operational planning.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
Supervision and Leadership
- Recruit, train and supervise shop personnel
- Assign daily tasks, prioritize repairs, and monitor workflow to maintain efficiency and minimize vehicle downtime.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations for shop staff, providing feedback and professional development opportunities.
Safety
- Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles
- Promote and enforce workplace safety standards, ensuring a clean and hazard-free work environment
- Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are kept in safe operating condition.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to Director for Transportation Services.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other
- Conduct annual inventory of equipment and supplies. Recommend replacement of equipment when needed.
- Assist in compiling department budget.
- Establish and maintain relationships with external vendors for parts, equipment, and specialized repairs.
- Provide input on vehicle replacement schedules based on maintenance history and lifecycle costs.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
- Operate bus and vehicles as needed.
- Drive a school bus route as required by the Transportation Services Department
- Other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Lead Transportation Mechanic. Other supervisory responsibilities as assigned by the Director for Transportation Services.

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.
Posture: Frequent standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Frequent walking; frequent climbing, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; work must be performed on-site.
