Job Title: Training and Safety Supervisor

Primary Purpose: Assists the Director for Transportation Services in administration of the department’s entire safety program. To lead and provide transportation training in the safe operation of school buses, school bus equipment and student management. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations, promotes a culture of safety among drivers and staff, and oversees training, accident investigations, and risk management initiatives.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High school Diploma or equivalent
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Transportation, or related field preferred
- Clear and valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Successful completion of state-mandated school bus driver training and certification program.
- Certification in safety or risk management (e.g. Certified Safety Professional (CSP), School Bus Safety Trainer Certification, TAPT Training Certification) is preferred
- Current CPR certification preferred
Experience:
- Three years experience in transportation safety, risk management, or related roles, preferable in a school or public sector environment
- Four years experience as a school bus driver
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong knowledge of federal, state and local transportation regulations (e.g., FMCSA, DOT, and OSHA)
- Strong organization and group presentation skills with the ability to train and motivate staff in safety best practices.
- Exceptional communication, public relation and interpersonal skills
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to identify and address safety risks proactively
- Proficiency in transportation management software, incident tracking systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong supervisory, organizational and problem-solving skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Safety and Training Program Management
- Develop, implement, and monitor the transportation training program to include CDL training, operational training, special needs training, refresher training, and specialized skill training.
- Works with the Director for Transportation Services to implement an approved Federal ELDT “School Bus Driver Training Course,” monitoring it and recommending upgrades to the course as necessary.
- Train School Bus Drivers to be able to obtain a commercial driver’s license and to safely operate a school bus in accordance with state laws, district policies and procedures and student behavior management.
- Train School Bus Monitors in student behavior management and the use of specialized equipment required for the safe transport of students.
- Provide retraining as directed and post-accident training to those employees involved in accidents, focusing on the conditions and actions causing the accident as determined by the accident investigation.
- Assist, review and approve evaluations to determine if an employee meets the standards and expectations of the district, with respect to safety.
- Review and approve the completion of specific safety training before an employee is allowed to continue working or the performance of an operation.
- Recommend safety and training programs to address safety needs as a result of observation, discussion with transportation personnel, vehicle inspections and participation in accident response and investigations.
- Work cooperatively with the Transportation Supervisor to recommend proper safety equipment or district procedures needed to improve transportation safety.
- Assist/conduct monthly safety meetings to refresh and impart new safety training.
- Inspect vehicles, conduct loading/unloading zone assessments and road observations as directed and document and report findings.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents on trainee’s progress.
- Identify and train qualified transportation employees to participate in the annual CENTEX/TAPT Bus Roadeo.
Risk Management
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses involving school transportation vehicles preparing detailed reports, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state and local transportation regulations, including Department of Transportation (DOT) and school district policies
- Audit driver certifications, training records, and compliance documentation to ensure alignment with regulations.
- Conduct regular vehicle, equipment, and facility inspections to identify and mitigate safety risks.
- Compiles and analyzes monthly and periodic statistical reports of pertinent personal injury and vehicle accident data.
- Assist in annual TEA Accident Reporting
- Recruit, interview, and recommend qualified candidates for the positions of school bus drivers and monitors to the Director for Transportation Services.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for transportation-related incidents.
- Coordinate safety drills, including bus evacuation and crisis management exercises, for students and staff.
- Serve as a point-of-contact for emergencies involving transportation services, ensuring swift and effective resolution.
- Develop and implement risk reduction strategies, including monitoring trends, and addressing recurring safety issues.
Other
- Process driving and safety records of all new applicants.
- Provide regular updates to the Director for Transportation Services on safety initiatives, compliance, and areas of improvement
- Identifies and develops potential candidates for TEEX and or TAPT Training Academy Certification program.
- Drive a school bus route as required by the Transportation Services Department.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work early shift; may work irregular and prolonged hours; work on-site
