What are the responsibilities and job description for the Barista at Local Bookshop position at Little Professor?
Little Professor Bookshop is expanding its own coffee & espresso service, sourced from locally-owned June Coffee, as well as adding a second location in Pepper Place by fall 2022 (watch our teaser video here).
We're looking for local coffee (& book) lovers interested in helping our community grow. We see ourselves as not merely a bookstore, but a neighborhood-centric community hub - a place locals visit to grab a cappuccino, attend a book club, browse our shelves, or meet a friend.
Starting this month, we're expanding our hours, staff & equipment. Practically, this position will be managing our coffee service which will start at 7am daily. Products & practices include batch drip coffee, the usual range of espresso drinks, steaming whole and/or milk alternatives, preparing iced drinks, helping customers complete checkout, stocking supplies, selling pre-baked local pastries, and more.
Requirements
- You appreciate & understand the craft & execution of exceptional coffee. We’re admittedly a little snobbish about what goes into a perfect cup, and we’re looking for others that agree.
- You really enjoy people and the difficult balance of friendly customer service. You’re energized by meeting new people, as well as understand the high dignity of service. This is a customer-facing role; you’ll be dialoguing with customers as you prepare beverages and helping ring them out.
- You can promote coffee & pastry sales by educating customers on different offerings. We rotate a seasonal menu, have weekend pastries from Bandit, so it's important customers are educated on our full range of options.
- You enjoy reading. While you’ll predominantly be executing coffee, there will be some opportunities for cross-training & helping our readers find their next great book.
- Previous barista experience is preferred, particularly at a "third wave" craft coffee shop. Training is available if you don’t meet this requirement, but have the right customer-facing personality & commitment to excellence.
Benefits
- This is an hourly, shift-based position and will range from 10-20 hours per week, depending on your availability and schedule.
- You will work in conjunction with our coffee manager to schedule shifts, manage time off, or work around school or travel obligations.
