Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observing Crime Scene Processing:Attending and observing experienced Crime Scene Specialists as they document, search, collect, and preserve evidence at various crime scenes.
- Shadowing Evidence Handling Procedures:Observing the proper chain of custody, packaging, and transportation of evidence.
- Attending Training Sessions:Participating in any relevant training sessions offered to staff on topics like photography, fingerprinting, or evidence collection techniques.
- Reviewing Case Files and Reports:With permission and under supervision, reading and learning from past crime scene reports and case files (redacted to protect privacy).
- Learning about Forensic Disciplines:Gaining exposure to different forensic disciplines that interact with crime scene investigation, such as firearm examination, DNA analysis and Latent Print examination..
- Understanding Legal and Ethical Considerations:Learning about the legal framework surrounding crime scene investigation and the ethical responsibilities of CSIs.
- Assisting with Photography and Videography:Helping set up equipment, take photographs or videos of the scene and evidence (not independently documenting critical evidence).
- Preparing Supplies and Equipment:Organizing and maintaining crime scene kits, ensuring adequate supplies are available.
- Assisting with Scene Setup:Helping with tasks like setting up barriers or lighting at a crime scene.
- Cleaning and Maintaining Equipment:Ensuring that tools and equipment are clean and in good working order.
- Assisting with Documentation:Helping with administrative tasks such as organizing paperwork or logging information (not independently completing official reports).
- Assisting with Inventory:Helping to inventory evidence or supplies.
- Research Tasks:Conducting research on specific forensic techniques or topics as assigned.
- Data Entry:Assisting with data entry tasks related to evidence or case information (under supervision).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Currently enrolled in an Associate’s or higher level program with the area of study in Forensic Sciences or a related field
- Minimum 2.5 G.P.A.
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Must have a valid driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Knowledge of photography, fingerprint development, evidence handling, and report writing preferred
- Ability to work independently and part of a team
- Flexibility and ability to multi-task
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
