Job Overview
The Director of Health Finance is responsible for overseeing all financial operations within the Little Shell Health Clinic (LSHC). This individual will manage the clinic's financial health, strategic financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and accounting standards. The Director of Health Finance will collaborate closely with the Administration Team to ensure sound financial decision-making, and will be instrumental in driving operational efficiency and financial growth for the clinic.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all financial operations of the clinic, including budgeting, financial reporting, and cash flow management.
- Develop and maintain accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
- Oversee the annual budget process and ensure that the clinic operates within approved budgetary guidelines.
- Ensure that the clinic complies with all federal, state, and tribal financial regulations, including grant reporting, tax filings, and reimbursement policies.
- Support government and departmental audits and provide necessary documentation for financial audits, internal controls, and quality assurance processes.
- Provide financial analysis and advice to the Executive Director, Administration team, and department leaders to support strategic decision-making and long-term planning.
- When necessary, develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the clinic's mission, values, and goals.
- Manage the financial aspects of grants and contracts, including monitoring spending, compliance, and reporting.
- Work closely with the grants management team to ensure proper use of funding and identify new funding opportunities to support the clinic’s services.
- Collaborate with other department leaders to ensure alignment of financial resources with operational needs and priorities.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial forecasting, tracking of actual versus budgeted performance, and adjustment of financial strategies as needed
- Maintain financial records, consolidated financial statements, accounts payable, internal and external financial reporting, tax returns, and regulatory compliance.
- Prepare and present financial reports to clinic leadership, tribal leadership, and other stakeholders as needed.
- Ensure clear and effective communication of financial information to non-financial stakeholders, including clinic staff and community members.
- Supervisory responsibilities include signing and submitting timecards, purchase requests, time off requests, minor disciplinary actions, performance evaluations, and other managerial duties.
- Provide exceptional customer service and model the mission of the LSHC when interacting with internal and external stakeholders, promoting a positive image for the health clinic.
- Other duties as assigned.
Training & Skills
Must possess at least seven years’ experience in financial management, with progressively responsible leadership roles. Experience working with American Indian/Alaska Native, minority, or under-resourced communities is desired. Experience working with or for an Indian Health Care Provider would be preferred.
Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of financial management, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Strong understanding of strategic financial planning in a healthcare environment, especially in public or non-profit sectors.
- Knowledge of healthcare financial metrics, such as cost per patient, revenue cycle management, and the impact of financial decisions on patient care and community services.
- Proficient in financial software and accounting systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, Abila, MIP, or Microix, or healthcare-specific systems) for budgeting, reporting, and forecasting.
Skills
- Strong problem-solving skills to address financial issues that may affect clinic operations, resource allocation, or service delivery.
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial data in a clear and concise manner to non-financial stakeholders, including community members, tribal leadership, and clinic staff.
Abilities
- Ability to analyze complex financial data and interpret trends, budget variances, and other key financial indicators to provide strategic recommendations.
- Ability to anticipate financial challenges and proactively recommend solutions, such as cost-saving measures or alternative funding sources.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field required, or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field is preferred.
Physical Demands
Essential job duties may require regular lifting, pushing and pulling up to 10-20 pounds, and the ability to sit for long periods. The ability to hear normal conversational discussion and near and far visual clarity is required.

About the Little Shell Health Clinic
The Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana (Tribe) will assume operations of the Little Shell Health Clinic, located in Great Falls, MT, on Tuesday July 1, 2025. The Tribe is seeking to fill key positions to support operations at the Clinic before, during, and after this transition. We are looking for team members who are skilled, collaborative, and flexible.
The Clinic provides outpatient services to American Indian and Alaska Native citizens including, but not limited to, family medicine, pediatric care, behavioral health, laboratory services, pharmacy, radiology, optometry, and dental care. The Clinic currently operates Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
