Registered Nurse Educator for Perioperative Services is a key member of surgical services. Responsibilities include the design and delivery of clinician (primarily nursing), professional/leadership development programs, policies, activities, assessment tools, and systems. Promotes excellence in patient care, through skill acquisition in evidence-based nursing practice and clinical inquiry. Collaborates with nursing leadership to tailor programs and resources based on needs assessments. Meets the diverse requirements of the nursing units, patient populations, regulatory and accreditation and strategic goals of the organization.
Apply knowledge of clinical education and training practices to develop and deliver education and training content for all levels of clinicians, primarily nurses, at the medical center. Mentors and precepts new nursing and clinical staff and function as a leader and information resource. Holds in-depth specialty knowledge within a nursing discipline. Leads or oversee the implementation of new programs.
As the Educator for Perioperative Services, assists in training Perioperative staff in electronic processes, to include intraoperative documentation, ordering labs, etc., charging, preference card editing and updates as well as ensuring clinical documentation is finalized, charges verified, change requests submitted and communicated to electronic medical record.

- Should be provided with time and resources to meet the needs for comprehensive education of each member of the perioperative team, including, but not limited to, initial onboarding, annual competency verification, and in-service programs about new equipment or processes.
- Commits to life-long learning, advancing formal education and achieving certifications in specialty areas.
- Develops, plans, and delivers a curriculum for target audiences by evaluating clinical protocols, standards of care, practice guidelines and policies, and procedures within clinical specialties.
- Is responsible for ensuring all staff have the appropriate competencies for their scope of work and that those competencies are current per hospital policy.
- Develop and implement processes to ensure that nursing education and training activities are compliant with all legal and organizational policies for standards of care.
- Advances nursing expertise by pursuing professional development, cross training and encourages ongoing staff development, and continuing education.
- Participates in committees, task forces, and projects that evaluate a broad variety of issues, including quality of care, patient safety, and licensure and accreditation requirements.
- Works with nursing leadership to apply best practice and nursing research data to improve clinical practice and outcome assessments.
- Participate and represent the department in hospital meetings (e.g., EHR, Nursing practice counsel)
- Participate in new product evaluation and facilitate education for staff.
- Facilitate and evaluate with Education department student observation within surgical services.
- Support all areas of surgical services including Same Day/PACU, ENDO, and Sterile Processing.
- Responsible for ensuring data integrity through periodic chart audits and reviewing/revising policies/procedures in the use of supplied system software .
- Perform all other duties as required or assigned including working as a staff nurse, as needed, to ensure staffing coverage of department.
- A bachelor’s degree of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Current RN License.
- ACLS/PALS certification at time of hire or withing 1 year employment
- Five (5 ) or more years of Perioperative clinical experience
- Experience and proven success in developing and delivering clinical nursing education and training material for orientation, class training, and skills / competency learning and leadership development.
- Experience in the creation of patient education materials, written and/or visual.
- Demonstrated program and project management skills.
- Must have excellent written, computer, and verbal communication skills.
- Must have decision-making, problem-solving, and prioritizing skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
- Advanced degree in Nursing or comparable.
- Certificate within area of specialty.
- Quality Improvement and/or Regulatory experience.
- Experience with researching current practice, collation of statistical data, and development of appropriate presentation techniques.
- Experience with a variety of electronic health records (e.g. Cerner, Allscripts)
