Littleton Winter Shelter is seeking a motivated and proven director to oversee the day-to-day operations of an emergency overnight low barrier* winter shelter located in Littleton, NH. Our ideal candidate will be able to juggle multiple priorities, be an effective communicator, and a self-starter capable of working independently. Must have experience in facilities management, staff supervision, and familiarity and sensitivity to the challenges and issues faced by people experiencing unsheltered and unhoused living conditions. The Director will be responsible for the overall safety and security of guests of the winter overnight and overseeing/coordinating the daily operations. The winter shelter will serve 8-10 individuals in need of shelter. This is a temporary, contracted 3-4month position based on 30 hours per week at a rate of pay of $25 per hour. Position to begin Mid December and run through April 30, 2025.

Candidate must be willing to work flexible hours including some evenings, early mornings, and occasional weekend hours. On call is required when not present at shelter to answer questions and help handle any problems that might arise. Candidate must be flexible with start/end date.

Some heavy lifting may be required (moving cots, supplies etc.)

Typical Duties of the Director will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Staffing

  • Ensure that the overnight shelter is staffed by no fewer than two people at all times during operational hours (6PM-7AM).
  • Coordinate staffing and volunteers.
  • Ensure that staff have sufficient training to de-escalate small conflicts and can respond to guests with courtesy and compassion.
  • Ensure that staff/volunteers understand basic safety protocols and when a situation may require emergency responders/police. Administration
  • Regular/daily collection and reporting of guest demographic information and warming center-related expenses required for monthly reporting.
  • Provide, as needed, updates to the board on status of shelter operations. Leverage board support, as need, for operational challenges.
  • Assist with coordination of facility upgrades and renovations, and set-up prior to shelter opening in January.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the shelter is kept clean and safe daily.
  • Ensure that staff understand and consistently practice basic safety protocols.
  • Coordinate food: snacks, coffee etc.
  • Ensure that the shelter has and maintains adequate supplies, and monitor their use.
  • Conduct regular walk-throughs at the winter overnight shelter to identify potential problems or need to adjust operational practices or protocols.
  • Ensure that staff are CPR, first aid and Narcan trained.
  • Ensure that the overnight shelter guests are provided with current information related to key community resources e.g. general assistance, mental health/crisis support, recovery/substance use disorder resources, food pantries, immigrant resources, etc. and understands how to access those resources.
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant work experience in settings serving people experiencing homelessness – with residential experience a plus. Or will consider a combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience working with people with mental illness and substance use challenges.
  • Basic knowledge of homelessness and its causes.
  • Good organization skills and ability to track and execute multiple projects, simultaneously with efficiency and accuracy.

* A low-barrier shelter is an emergency shelter that provides immediate access to shelter without requiring certain criteria, such as: criminal background checks, credit checks, income verification, program participation, sobriety, and identification.

Pay: $25.00 per hour
